This was kind of disappointing. I really wanted to learn about3 Stars for The Spy (audiobook) by Paulo Coelho read by Hillary Huber and Paul Boehmer.
This was kind of disappointing. I really wanted to learn about Mata Hari but this biography just seemed so slanted. I recognized her name but I really didn’t know anything about her. And this book just seems to proclaim her innocence and show her accusers misguided. But it really feels like a lot of her story was left out. ...more

As much time as I spend in Home Depot this book felt like a biography of my second family. I’m there nearly every day and sometimes three or four times in a day. Actually I listened to a small part of this book in Home Depot as I was picking something up for the next day’s job. I’ve been doing this for more than a decade. I know all of the different layouts of the stores and I recognize a lot of the staff. I’ve spent a lot of money at Home Depot and it was interesting to hear how some of it has gone to help so many charities and it’s made a real difference in so many people’s lives.
Bernie Marcus is just an amazing person. The challenges that he has overcome and everything that he’s accomplished is really inspirational. I think that this is a must read for anyone who is interested in business or charities. You can’t go wrong with his examples. ...more

I’m surprised that this expedition isn’t more well known, to me it seems like it should be up there with the Shackleton Expedition. I had known idea that the former president Theodore Roosevelt went on an expedition to the Amazon to explore one of the most dangerous rivers in the world. This was a well funded expedition but they were sadly ill prepared for this jungle. Everything around them was trying to hurt or kill them. Unfortunately several men lost their lives and Roosevelt himself nearly died. This is a well written account of this gruesome adventure. ...more

Maybe the author should have started with his own story instead of finishing with it. It was kind of a letdown to find out that this book was his own self help project that we ultimately paid for. His wife thought he was getting fat and he realized that he was in the habit of eating a cookie at work every day. So that’s why the stories feel random. The goal of this book was for the author to lose eight pounds and get out of the habit of eating a cookie every day. Some of the stories are interesting but others just let me scratching my head wondering what am I supposed to get from that. ...more

This biography was 5 Stars for The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man: A Memoir by Paul Newman read by David Rosenthal foreword by Melissa Newman.
This biography was pulled together from an early attempt by Paul Newman to try and set the record straight. In 1986 he had a close friend start talking an oral history of friends and family and then later Paul would give his side of the story. After a huge amount of conversations were recorded this project ended up getting abandoned and wasn’t rediscovered until well after his death.
This ends up being an interesting approach to a memoir, it’s as much about how his family and friends saw him as it’s how he saw himself. It was interesting for me to fill in all the details about his life that I didn’t know. ...more
