A piece of old bread or a spark of humanity Are the last bastions of hope in human made hell Just one day can feel very long if one is in a Russian lab A piece of old bread or a spark of humanity Are the last bastions of hope in human made hell Just one day can feel very long if one is in a Russian labor, optional death and extermination, camp. Solzhenitsyn describes the autobiographical impressions of how prisoners, guards, and incredibly incompetent bureaucracy work together in a mass murdering machinery with unknown millions of victims. The personality traits of the angels and devils of this purgatory are the main focus besides the Appreciation of the small things in life As so often, the Western reader realizes how precious and privileged one can be with food, a home, and especially peace in a, not always given, democracy. Because works like this can still bring many people around the world into prisons similar to the camps described in this work, if not death and terror squads already did the killing job with even less subtility before. What always, subjectively, comes to mind when confronted with the biggest atrocities humans are able to orchestrate, is that Labor, concentration, and extermination camps Around the world are, were, and will be always the same. But the big difference is if there is anyone like Solzhenitsyn describing them and an audience reading it and spreading the word. Because talking about the dark aspects of a nation's history is often primarily seen as unpatriotic nest fouling, especially in the country that committed the crimes and if it won the war. Contrast for instance German/Japanese/ Russian/Chinese history and how much is known about it nowadays thanks to history written by the winners. Nobody knows how many million Russian and Chinese civilians were killed by their own governments. And because close to each other big, especially colonial, nation built its wealth on exploitation, war, and crimes against humanity, optional against its own people too, this topic often will be avoided like the plague. No country is interested in that, and combined with the mentioned Winners writing history what should nowadays people do? They didn´t commit crimes centuries and decades ago and what´s making it even more unsolvable are the economic and territorial interests that are still directly related to it. Colonialism and later fascism and communism made some nations incredibly rich superpowers, some even stayed at that level. Historical revisionism, some more truth in history books, may even be tolerated as a great greenwashing, corporate responsibility, and public relation stunt. But giving back land, wealth, and products thanks to superior industrial and technological capabilities? Not so much, imagine how the US would look if it would just give back some of all the land that once belonged to the indigenous people. Because After institutionalized mass murdering and genocide https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocid... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_... saying sorry is fine, but everything else just too cost expensive, and no real cheap, economic alternative in the spirit of the holy shareholder value. "Knight, victorian lady, Dandy gentlemen,… do you want to be cured or die?" „Where´s the difference?“ "I fear there isn´t any, except that you have to pay me for torturing you." „Please let me die naturally without extra inflicted pain." "Nope, I am sorry, that might be impossible." Unbelievable that of all this happened, both as quackery and as conventional, taught medical practice. Everyone knows the one or other strange tale about something like bloodletting, lobotomies and medicine closer to torture until death than to a cure. But it was real and the black comedy style so-called physicians and miracle healers used to try to help their patients can in retrospective just be seen with disgust, disbelief or other emotions, depending on the readers' character. Rofl. They tried everything to kill and harm their patients, be it from plants or animal poisons, man-made mixtures, any chemicals or obscure cures involving physics, nothing has been left out in a field that still had to become modern medicine. I mean, those freaking lunatics made, in their immense stupidity. coining the term Semmelweis reflex https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelw... possible. In the 19th century, surgeons were stubborn as little kids and refused to wash their swift fingers before doing operations or between operations or anytime. „I will just rub the blood and pus in the napkin before eating your delicious meal honey, cause you know, the dirt makes the taste. It was a hard day, had 25 births and 12 surgeries, may you hand me a piece of cake, thanks, no, I don´t need a plate.“ It made no large difference if one searched help from a snake oil salesman or a studied physician, just good luck and a strong constitution could save one. In the cases of tobacco, cocaine, heroin, etc. there were financial backgrounds too, because if there was an added bonus level of addictive properties, even more fabulous money money could be made than with just brewing together any strange wonder cure. Of course today, with the FDA and similar government authorities around the globe, it´s not as bad in the past, but wherever public and private interests collide, trouble and collateral long time damage is sure. What came to my mind after finishing the book is how many unknown, well-intentioned, possibly bit lobby clean-washed mega quackeries we might have going on in the field of science, nutrition, medicine, let´s just say everywhere. As mindless and lunatic the cures of the past might have been, they were to certain extent unavoidable to partly innocent and in contrast to that, our actual problems with scientific research regarding funding, objectivity, industry interests, etc. could lead to some funny to painful to deadly surprises of much larger scale in the future, because there are much more test dummies around today in those real-life, long-time experiments going on whenever one takes a bite of a highly processed food or a fancy new pill or just moves and lives in environments filled with so many new materials, radiations, etc.. The cures of the past killed at least just the ones with the bad luck of coming in contact with the caricature of a doctor, but today nearly anyone is involved. Of course, general fraud by tricksters will stay a topic because humans are humans, but compared to institutionalized problems we´ve created ourselves it seems unimportant. Oligarchies aren´t just a thing in dictatorships or fringe puppet democracies, but the real deal in the US and most of Europe too. One of the best met Oligarchies aren´t just a thing in dictatorships or fringe puppet democracies, but the real deal in the US and most of Europe too. One of the best meta analysis of how neofeudalism, neocolonialism, and the notorious neoliberalism, what a fraud, could become the driving forces of the 20th and 21st century, a stunning big history picture of how just 2 good decades, the 50s and 60s, were given to the people before greed, personified as the almighty mister mammon, destroyed everything. Again, as so often in history. And the future. Meh, ok, as long as humans will exist. It´s not as if Chomsky, Klein, Ziegler, Graeber, etc. wouldn´t be repeating this important message for, in some cases, decades now, but everything that once was a living, healthy democracy has been sold to big business, deregulated, neoliberated until nothing of a long time ago working social infrastructure, public whatever nets, or a last grain of distributional justice was left. The focus on Koch industries is a prime example of how the good old evergreen „Whose money I take, whose song I sing“ is the ultimate earwig and all time playing megahit in any kind of government, big or small, openly democratically camouflaged or totally banana. The ways taxfree dollars are whitewashed, reused, put in gerrymandering, hundreds of fake NGOs, all kind of far right wing political parties ( in astroturfed fake extreme left, green, whatever is necessary to give them negative publicity, too), conservative movements, republicans, etc. would mean long prison sentences for each normal, small average Joe. It would be a combination of tax fraud, financial crimes, and massive, illegal manipulation of democratic processes. But as soon one is too big to fail, there are no rules anymore, nobody will ever be annoyed with any kind of legal consequences, because the companies, conglomerates, and mega wealthy billionaires get anything written, any wish fulfilled by the senate, government, judges, whoever, it doesn´t matter. All the scandals, and often even open and free information about how government functions these days, are just the tip of the iceberg. The legal methods to do all of this are just what has to be made public, but what else happens in the background with the real dark, black money can hardly be imagined. This means that many Western democracies are under control by unknown amounts of black money from unknown sources, companies, rich individuals, other states, organized crime, the Illuminati, freaking reptilian overlords in the bodysuits of our leaders, heck! Seriously, the dimension of the black comedy potential of how societies function these days is so enormous that real life beat satire a long time ago. Right next to manipulating any kind of democratic progress with billions of dollars and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaga... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_m... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... is the problem of economic inequality, environmental destruction, and unimaginable suffering, death, and illness, especially in the Southern hemisphere, all directly related to and caused by these practices, fueled by neoliberalism, neocolonialism, and neoconservatism. Did you know that each serious scientist (in economics cough cough) made fun of Milton Friedman before he became the apologist and chief demagogue of dog eat dog turbocapitalism and globalization? Well, guess who made him Americas´ next super economist? Exactly these superrich people ruining lives for everyone since, let´s say 1969, because the whole mess began and continued with republican and, and that's very important to note and think about, democratic presidents and their "fiscal plans" these days. Nothing changed when democrats ruled a house or houses, which means that voting is futile because everything stays the freaking, worsening same. Even if one of the big players is ever caught with something that´s too extreme to be covered, censored, and hidden from the public eye, the only thing waiting is some time of house arrest or a luxury prison she/he owns 30 percent of and all jailers are servants or something. But mostly, because many very mighty people are involved, nothing happens or someone else is sacrificed so that the real perpetrators are never caught. And, to even top that all, there are simply no laws that could do any real harm to someone involved in the big, white collar financial crimes, and, for logical reasons, there won´t be any soon or anytime. I mean, who would pay billions of lobbyism money for a law that´s bad for one´s own business practices? That would just be stupid, one needs security and self protection. The way out of this mess? Well, civil movements, real NGOs (don´t ask me how to identify the difference between real and astroturfing, it´s like deep fake, indistinguishable from reality), the internet, social media, breeding the next generation of enlightened human beings, but please, really, forget politics. Because, maybe anyone else could have noticed it too, nothing changes no matter what party, left or right, green or coal, monogamy or polygamy, liberal, progressive, conservative, socialistic, whatever, is in power; income inequality, environmental destruction, climate change, poverty, everything just keeps worsening. All just empty drivel, forced into line propaganda blather blather, yadda yadda yadda about the vague symptoms of the many inherent maladies of a lunatic exponential growth system, not even daring to name the varieties of the sickness, because all of their fringe ideologies are infested, compromised, and biased towards political correct do gooder positive thinking, everything is fine, nothing to see, manufacturing consent, mentality. It doesn´t matter who one is voting for, because they are all part of the problem of a dead, hilarious satire of a democracy so many died to establish. Same for the free press, the educational system, public discussion, it´s close to all just system hailing, distortion of history, avoiding at any cost to talk about the serious, underlying problems and causes, to avoid change, fairness, and a better world as long as possible. Check out the Koch clans´ lives, that´s so amazing that it seems closer to fiction than reality, but they acted that way, were brought up under such circumstances, and developed an, for all other people devastating, appetite to consume everything and all of it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_In... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_C.... It´s quite convenient that some facts have been „forgotten“ in the English Wikipedia that are mentioned in the German edition I do highly recommend to auto translate, especially the upbringing. Compare https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles... https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles... https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles... and enjoy: „The father was very strict and often beat the children up. In Charles ’first years of life (until 1940) they also had a strict female German teacher who scared them with German children's books like Struwwelpeter and presented Adolf Hitler as a role model. Charles later said his father taught him a work ethic when he was eight. While other children were allowed to have fun at the neighboring country club in their free time, he had to work in the garden and on the ranch. There´s not really much to add to that little English Wikipedia oopsie, it certainly wasn´t important or something, being indoctrinated by a literal nazi with the full approval of the, a bit right leaning, father. Neoliberalism is no science, but one of the most dangerous, destructive, and inhumane ideologies ever created. Andersen expands the thoughts of Chomsky Neoliberalism is no science, but one of the most dangerous, destructive, and inhumane ideologies ever created. Andersen expands the thoughts of Chomsky, Klein, Ziegler, Crouch, Graeber, etc., and capitalism and globalization criticism to a big history tour of how the US (and thereby indirectly Europe, that got brainwashed too) was ruined by bad science, lying with statistics, economics, dogmas, useful idiots, conservative right wing superrich, think tanks, and other usual suspects. What a lesson, what an amazing story of how the ideals of a nation were corrupted, how the once United States of America were defragmented, backlashed to a feudalistic new aristocratic age with inequality so enormous to be one of the rare democracies with such devastating numbers. Because it seems as if, duh, that all European, strong eco social Keynesian welfare states with high taxes and regulated markets, free education, health care, strong social nets, etc. generate happy people, no matter what quality of life index is used for comparison, the US fails terribly. When a state cares for its citizens and has (somewhat) control over its corporations, conglomerates, and other super entities, there are no medieval dystopic nightmare hellhole slums, industrial military complexes, extremism, dozens of millions of people left to fight to survive. Each neoliberal economist, sociologist, or politician should maybe spend 1 unprotected hour in a hood or prison, it´s not as if she/he would survive it, but before dying, she/he would possibly realize the stupidity of fringe science. Those are no scientists, but bought, demagogic apologists. But what flies too deep under the radar and is hardly ever asked is the question: What were the democrats, green, left, progressives (I was and still kind of am in this camp too, although highly disillusioned and frustrated) doing all the time and why did nothing change when they were in power? Well, let´s see. It´s irritating that this realistic view of how our current world with all its horrors was formed is completely underrepresented, if not even censored, in close to all media, no matter if left or right. Who dares to criticize the system, the consent, who wants to speak up, to start the radical necessary change for people and the planet? Well, nobody, because everyone is concerned about the main topics given to the people by controlled propaganda media and well, it was me and, as he mentions, the author too. And don´t get me wrong, but just as the author concludes and realizes for himself, we are sold, lost, and all hope is gone, because the "good" left, liberal, progressive, democratic, eco social, environmental, etc. side has been bought and sold, is manipulated without noticing, to just talk about and concentrate on irrelevant topics that don´t change the system or don´t even realize that there is still an immense problem. Because they are living in their ivory towers, secure suburbs, and fantasy lands with imaginary visions of how the world really works. And I was one of them, which makes me feel kind of ashamed, which is usually a rare thing, because I´m quite a bigoted fellow. Just as Andersen, which makes this work even more precious than the other books describing the self destructive potential of our current system: He realizes the blind spots, cognitive biases, hidden lunacies, etc. of mentioned "good" activities and how they brainwashed him with feel good propaganda made influenced by the code of conducts, corporate responsibility, and whitewashing political feelgood drivel. One thing I just don´t get about people is how nonfiction could get so infested with anecdotal, autobiographical, and thereby often completely irrelevant topics and persons. Don´t get me wrong, great inventions, great leaders, everything fine, but they are nothing and unimportant in comparison to the development of the whole humans' species. But the real deal, heavy, difficult books have the problem of being very nasty to read, attacking things and ideas one loves, being filled with loads of facts, history, and general more boring stuff than the glorious life of whoever just wrote about what she/he did for a living. Imagine just one of the really important, critical thinkers being sold and reviewed like a billionaire's way to wealth or superstar or ex president anecdotes (or at least instead of terrible, apologetic Steven Pinker and Hans Rosling propaganda). That would make a real impact, initialize some change but nope, even the rare people that read books prefer to stay in their comfort zone and be not that dangerously progressive with their reading choices. Not that the neighbors, friends, family, say that they are dirty leftist communists or something, reading such bad, dangerous books that should best be burned. Regarding sacrificing everything to fire: The witch hunt started against the poorest and keeps expanding towards middle and upper middle class, until nothing will be left except of the elite owning everything. But enough of self criticism of the high handed do gooders, SJWs, and political overcorrect bigoted hypocrites, back to the show. It´s completely understandable that people revolt and troll against the descriptions of the real life offered in this book and by mentioned authors, because everyone hates to accept that ideology and world view, given in schools and universities, beloved newspapers full of empty pseudo fringe pop psychology sociology economy, etc empty drivel, is just plain wrong, mumbo jumbo, yadda yadda, empty drivel, closer to crazy cults and sects than anything substantial, über ultra replication crises, a world built on wacky scheme snake oil salesman mentality. It will take decades and longer to change anything substantial and until then, we will have erased up to anything above 90 or even 95 and more percent of all lifeforms on earth, the human era, the Anthropocene, will forever be archeologically seen as the time of the greatest mass killing of species just for profit. Before we go to another world and do the same there, of course, maybe even just preemptive, you know, sterilize the whole Goldilock zone planet for convenience, because it´s cheaper or because the megacorporations controlling everything in the solar systems don´t want to bother with indigenous people and stuff. Try to calculate how many people will have unnecessarily and preventably suffered and died until then, because the most dangerous entities humans ever created, corporations, are just lifting off. So, take all the victims of already half a century of exploitation and natural destruction and add, what? 30, 50, 125 more years of this lunacy, and the death toll is what? A 1 or 2 digit billion number? What is talked about in this book are first world country problems, one of the richest states in the world is doing these terrible things with its own people, we don´t even know how much suffering has been caused by this in the Southern hemisphere over the last decades. After colonialism and slavery ended, neoliberalism and neocolonialism came to continue business as usual. To quote George Carlin: “Forget the politicians. The politicians are put there to give you the idea you have freedom of choice. You don't. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land, they own and control the corporations that've long since bought and paid for, the senate, the congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pocket, and they own all the big media companies so they control just about all of the news and the information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else. But I'll tell you what they don't want. They don't want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don't want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They're not interested in that. That doesn't help them.” Personal, irrelevant, boring, anecdotal, empty drivel: I really wanted to leave the nonfiction reading boat after White fragility https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4... and Why I am no longer talking to white people about race https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... destroyed everything about the green left ideology I tended to surf on for decades, but I just couldn´t resist the temptation to get this ingenious infodump. Hopefully, I will be stronger in the future. However, spread the word, the only thing left to perfectly self deceit oneself into believing that it´s not far too late, especially for close to all species on earth. I´ve read similar descriptions of the immense perversion, inhumanity, and madness of our current system, to find in the social criticism shelves. A wiki walk can be as refreshing to the mind as a walk through nature in this completely overrated real life outside books: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthrop... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_i... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_His... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biodive... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullshi... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitalism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultura... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrim... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecocide https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinct... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habitat... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocen... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarce... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrohi... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_m... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neocolo... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neolibe... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prejudice https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison%... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaga... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restora... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retribu... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangu... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_... ...more |

Fake newsing one´s way to the top. A nice description of how demagogic politicians and conservative, right wing media outlets work together. The cyni Fake newsing one´s way to the top. A nice description of how demagogic politicians and conservative, right wing media outlets work together. The cynicism and cold intelligence behind these networks are astonishing, it´s getting more and more movie like, a mixture of thriller, dark satire, and a mixture of Orwellian and Huxleyian visions. One of the most important conclusions of this work is not to just criticize the obviously biased, far right and left wing media outlets, but the so called objective, free press too. Because they are not producing easy to see propaganda, but subtle consent towards that the economic and democratic system is still working, which is totally wrong too. George Carlin said it best https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/9646... Of course, there are immense differences in quality and sophistication between Fox and CNN, but in general, each kind of medium has a more or less obvious and well or bad hidden mixture of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaga... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_m... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... I can´t overemphasize this enough, one of the reasons why I am often throwing around with these 4 links is that people tend to think of an end of history, of a kind of final democratic victory in states with a free press, but instead Chomsky, Crouch, etc. are right when they are describing a corporatocracy completely out of control for decades that is disguised as ridiculous voting all 4 to 5 years with all media together creating the phantasmagoria of lived enlightened ideals, which is not the case. Even the most social democratic, left, even green media and parties don´t say out loud that the whole press and governmental system is a satire, a bad joke, not even worth investing time and effort, because if there would be a good, fair, competent, not sold and completely lobby controlled sockpuppet parliament in close to every democratic Western country, the world wouldn´t be breaking to pieces, nature getting completely destroyed, millions unnecessarily dying each year, neofeudalism and neoliberalism devastating the once eco social Keyniasian European states while neocolonialism is overexploiting what is left of biodiversity in the Southern hemisphere, etc.. It´s ridiculous, it´s as if close to all state and private media would be reporting out of an insane asylum for decades now and everybody is wasting her/his time by thinking and talking about this garbage, never getting informed about the fact that there are many better alternatives. Because of much talk and discussion about the replication crisis, I add these thoughts to nonfiction books dealing with humanities, so you might have already seen it. One could call the replication crisis the viral fake news epidemic of many fields of science that was a hidden, chronic disease over decades and centuries and has become extremely widespread during the last years, since the first critics began vaccinating against it, provoking virulent counterarguments. I don´t know how else this could end than with nothing else than paradigm shifts, discovering many anachronisms, and a better, fact- and number based research with many control instances before something of an impact on the social policy gets accepted. Some soft science books are nothing more than fairytales for adults who never had the chance to built a free opinion because most of the media they consume to stay informed and get educated avoids any criticism of the current economic system. Without having read or heard ideas by Chomsky, Monbiot, Klein, Ken Robinson, Monbiot, Peter Singer, William McDonough, Ziegler, Colin Crouch, Jeremy Rifkin, David Graeber, John Perkins, and others, humans will always react to people like me, condemning the manipulation practiced everywhere with terrifying success, with anger and refusal. These authors don´t hide aspects of the truth and describe the real state of the world, don´t predict the future and preach the one only, the true way, ignoring anything like black swans, coincidences, or the, for each small child logical, fact that nobody knows what will happen, and collect exactly the free available data people such indoctrinated people to ignore forever. A few points that led to the replication crisis: I had an intuitive feeling regarding this for years, but the replication crisis proofed that there are too many interconnections of not strictly scientific fields such as economics and politics with many humanities. Look, already some of the titles are biased towards a more positive or negative attitude, but thinking too optimistic is the same mistake as being too pessimistic, it isn´t objective anymore and one can be instrumentalized without even recognizing it. In natural sciences, theoretical physicists, astrophysicists, physicians… that were friends of a certain idea will always say that there is the option of change, that a discovery may lead to a new revolution, and that their old work has to be reexamined. So in science regarding the real world the specialists are much more open to change than in some humanities, isn´t that strange? It would be as if one would say that all humans are representative, similar, that there are no differences. But it´s not, each time a study is made there are different people, opinions, so many coincidences, and unique happenings that it´s impossible to reproduce it. Scandinavia vs the normal world. The society people live in makes happiness, not theoretical, not definitive concepts. One can manipulate so many parameters in those studies that the result can be extremely positive or negative, just depending on what who funds the study and does the study wants as results. One could use the studies she/ he needs to create an optimistic or a pessimistic book and many studies about human nature are redundant, repetitive, or biased towards a certain result, often an optimistic outcome or spectacular, groundbreaking results. Do you know who does that too? Statistics, economics, politics, and faith. I wish I could be a bit more optimistic than realistic, but not hard evidence based stuff is a bit of a no go if it involves practical applications, especially if there is the danger of not working against big problems by doing as if they weren´t there. A few points that lead away from it: 1. Tech 2. Nordic model 3. Open data, open government, 4. Blockchains, cryptocurrencies, quantum computing, to make each financial transaction transparent and traceable. 5. Points mentioned in the Wiki article 6. It must be horrible for the poor scientists who work in those fields and are now suffering because the founding fathers used theories and concepts that have nothing to do with real science. They worked hard to build a career to just find out that the predecessors integrated methods that couldn´t work in other systems, let's say an evolving computer program or a machine or a human body or anywhere except in ones´ imagination. They are truly courageous to risk criticism because of the humanities bashing wave that won´t end soon. As in so many fields, it are a few black sheep who ruin everything for many others and the more progressive a young scientist is, the more he is in danger of getting smashed between a hyper sensible public awareness and the old anachronism shepherds, avoiding anything progressive with the danger of a paradigm shift or even a relativization of the field they dedicated their career to. There has to be strict segregation between theories and ideas and applications in real life, so that anything can be researched, but not used to do crazy things. The worst bad science practice includes, from Wikipedia, taken from the article about the replication crisis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replica... 1. The replication crisis (or replicability crisis or reproducibility crisis) is, as of 2020, an ongoing methodological crisis in which it has been found that many scientific studies are difficult or impossible to replicate or reproduce. The replication crisis affects the social sciences and medicine most severely.[ 2. The inability to replicate the studies of others has potentially grave consequences for many fields of science in which significant theories are grounded on unreproducible experimental work. The replication crisis has been particularly widely discussed in the field of psychology and in medicine, where a number of efforts have been made to re-investigate classic results 3. A 2016 poll of 1,500 scientists reported that 70% of them had failed to reproduce at least one other scientist's experiment (50% had failed to reproduce one of their own experiments).[8] In 2009, 2% of scientists admitted to falsifying studies at least once and 14% admitted to personally knowing someone who did. 4. „Psychological research is, on average, afflicted with low statistical power." 5. Firstly, questionable research practices (QRPs) have been identified as common in the field.[18] Such practices, while not intentionally fraudulent, involve capitalizing on the gray area of acceptable scientific practices or exploiting flexibility in data collection, analysis, and reporting, often in an effort to obtain a desired outcome. Examples of QRPs include selective reporting or partial publication of data (reporting only some of the study conditions or collected dependent measures in a publication), optional stopping (choosing when to stop data collection, often based on statistical significance of tests), p-value rounding (rounding p-values down to 0.05 to suggest statistical significance), file drawer effect (nonpublication of data), post-hoc storytelling (framing exploratory analyses as confirmatory analyses), and manipulation of outliers (either removing outliers or leaving outliers in a dataset to cause a statistical test to be significant).[18][19][20][21] A survey of over 2,000 psychologists indicated that a majority of respondents admitted to using at least one QRP.[18] False positive conclusions, often resulting from the pressure to publish or the author's own confirmation bias, are an inherent hazard in the field, requiring a certain degree of skepticism on the part of readers.[2 6. Secondly, psychology and social psychology in particular, has found itself at the center of several scandals involving outright fraudulent research, 7. Thirdly, several effects in psychological science have been found to be difficult to replicate even before the current replication crisis. Replications appear particularly difficult when research trials are pre-registered and conducted by research groups not highly invested in the theory under questioning. 8. Scrutiny of many effects have shown that several core beliefs are hard to replicate. A recent special edition of the journal Social Psychology focused on replication studies and a number of previously held beliefs were found to be difficult to replicate.[25] A 2012 special edition of the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science also focused on issues ranging from publication bias to null-aversion that contribute to the replication crises in psychology.[26] In 2015, the first open empirical study of reproducibility in psychology was published, called the Reproducibility Project. Researchers from around the world collaborated to replicate 100 empirical studies from three top psychology journals. Fewer than half of the attempted replications were successful at producing statistically significant results in the expected directions, though most of the attempted replications did produce trends in the expected directions. 9. Many research trials and meta-analyses are compromised by poor quality and conflicts of interest that involve both authors and professional advocacy organizations, resulting in many false positives regarding the effectiveness of certain types of psychotherapy 10. The reproducibility of 100 studies in psychological science from three high-ranking psychology journals.[44] Overall, 36% of the replications yielded significant findings (p value below 0.05) compared to 97% of the original studies that had significant effects. The mean effect size in the replications was approximately half the magnitude of the effects reported in the original studies. 11. Highlighting the social structure that discourages replication in psychology, Brian D. Earp and Jim A. C. Everett enumerated five points as to why replication attempts are uncommon:[50][51] 1. "Independent, direct replications of others' findings can be time-consuming for the replicating researcher" 2. "[Replications] are likely to take energy and resources directly away from other projects that reflect one's own original thinking" 3. "[Replications] are generally harder to publish (in large part because they are viewed as being unoriginal)" 4. "Even if [replications] are published, they are likely to be seen as 'bricklaying' exercises, rather than as major contributions to the field 5. "[Replications] bring less recognition and reward, and even basic career security, to their authors"[52] For these reasons the authors advocated that psychology is facing a disciplinary social dilemma, where the interests of the discipline are at odds with the interests of the individual researcher 12. Medicine. Out of 49 medical studies from 1990–2003 with more than 1000 citations, 45 claimed that the studied therapy was effective. Out of these studies, 16% were contradicted by subsequent studies, 16% had found stronger effects than did subsequent studies, 44% were replicated, and 24% remained largely unchallenged.[58] The US Food and Drug Administration in 1977–1990 found flaws in 10–20% of medical studies 13. Marketing is another discipline with a "desperate need" for replication.[64] Many famous marketing studies fail to be repeated upon replication, a notable example being the "too-many-choices" effect, in which a high number of choices of product makes a consumer less likely to purchase.[65] In addition to the previously mentioned arguments, replication studies in marketing are needed to examine the applicability of theories and models across countries and cultures, which is especially important because of possible influences of globalization. 14. A 2016 study in the journal Science found that one-third of 18 experimental studies from two top-tier economics journals (American Economic Review and the Quarterly Journal of Economics) failed to successfully replicate.[67][68] A 2017 study in the Economic Journal suggested that "the majority of the average effects in the empirical economics literature are exaggerated by a factor of at least 2 and at least one-third are exaggerated by a factor of 4 or more. 15. In the US, science's reproducibility crisis has become a topic of political contention, linked to the attempt to diminish regulations – e.g. ...more |

Why trying to become a better human, fit, smart, and thereby more attractive, when it´s so much easier to participate in murderous anonymous hate troll slutshaming victim blaming mobs. And it doesn´t end there, dozens of people have died because incels think that alphas and Stacies, even Beckies, have to die for their crime of working hard and improving themselves to be able to live happy lives. What gets less attention in the media, because it´s such an ugly, huge, evil beast, are the reasons that have been implemented in society for a very long time and get avoided because of political correctness gone mad, bigotry, and not wanting to offend the advertisers. It reminded me of https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... and the following concept: Don´t talk about inequality, because it implies so many problems related to dysfunctional democratic and economic systems. Better talk about poverty and how to reduce it by trickling down! Or, in this case, not about gender inequality and underlying sexism as a foundation of many societies, but about everyday discrimination in the workplace or gender pay gap, never something that digs too deep and criticizes the whole system. Instead of talking about the dozens of hidden, quietly ignored topics such as sexual abuse, discrimination, accepted daily sexism, ridiculed feminism, making big headlines about the maniacs who kill because they can´t get laid because of their own fault is a priority. It even seems as if there is more media attention and coverage about death threats, honor killings, wealthy white people getting stalked and hate trolled, than about the hundreds of millions of women who suffer from accepted downplayed violence, rape, and often finally homicide. Look at the murder statistics, the most dangerous persons probably live in ones´ house, because it are mostly males who kill parts of or their whole family. What an epic, ultimate fail of hegemonic masculinity and men´s rights movements manosphere. If there are real problems, the superior, rational, better, and higher evolved male human does the only intelligent thing. Kill everyone and oneself or run away and hide afterward. Before, as sick foreplay, death and rape threats for generally any woman who dares to be successful, famous, an activist or whatever, are an often seen hobby in these peer groups. The way until then could probably also be spend in incel movement, because they unite the idea of the alt right and other extremists with creative, good, oldfashioned models of feminity and the terrorist tactics of seeding fear and panic. I don´t really get it anymore, it´s like the Onion and other satire news websites had become reality (not as if there were still any differences between real, hard news, fake, and satire). White men, who are the most privileged persons on the planet and are king in discriminating everyone else for centuries, are forming groups like MRA Men rights activists, PUA pick up artists, MGTOW Men going their own way, and the already mentioned, infamous INCELS Involuntary celibates. It´s like rich people doing as if they were poor, this whole thing, these movements make absolutely no sense! They are caricaturing real, very important anti racism and anti sexism movement, playing the victim role, spreading hate, abuse, and rape techniques, and are actively promoting terror and murder. Together in bed with white supremacists, because they don´t get laid by anyone else (just the Incels, I couldn´t withstand that pun), they are very close to fascism and antisemitism and reminded me of a Sartre quote: “Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.” https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/7870... One of the sad ironies is that the incel movement has a solution to all its problems, even a word for it, looksmaxing, but instead of becoming a self improvement community that would make hate obsolete, they prefer to diss the ones that got it how to escape the vicious cycle. The idea of looksmaxing is even so superficial and nihilistic that they don´t understand that they should work hard and over long periods of time to improve their charisma, wit, career, healthy but not steroid fueled body, etc. Where are the state and the social media companies with their fancy codes of conduct, public responsibility, and lol, business ethics? Well, it´s too difficult and expensive for any kind of public or private internet security and cyberforensic agency or company to hunt all these people, just because they post some dozen rape and death threats a week, have criminal records for sexual offenses, or whatever. Just peanuts and if something happens, well, as said before, short media outcry, a few days of "How could this happen, think of the children" until it goes back to the usual "Walk on, nothing to see here." Of course some downplaying too, boys are boys, groping is just some fun without real victims, she wanted it too, it was an accident that she died, we just wanted to have some fun with her; completely normal and socially accepted stuff. The underlying social, media, big history, etc. reasons and very complex connections between very stupid societal models and all kind of evil isms have been overvivisected in other reviews of books dealing with the topics, to find in my "feminism equality" and "social criticism" shelves if interested. Enough cheap self promotion, back to the show. Nature had its reasons to integrate selection, Darwinian evolution, survival of the fittest, and females choosing the best males. Each human is free to learn, exercise, train, do one of the free multi k online video courses on how to be funny, entertaining, an actor, fit, friendly, etc. There is, as said as opening line, no reason or excuse to not invest in ones´ attractiveness, education, and charisma. It´s as if a person with weight problems and no medical issues hasn´t the discipline to change diet, lose weight, and train 3 to 5 times a week, maybe even while watching television, for instance, that´s really possible. And hates slim and fit people because of envy. It´s as if someone is too lazy and procrastinating (and has the luck of talent, money, or background to be privileged to be able to get an education) to pick a career and hates successful people. It´s as if someone hasn´t the self discipline to stay sober (without real issues and traumas that kind of legitimize substance abuse to a certain extent) and hates people who can drink moderately. It´s as if someone who is switching between atheism and religious extremism hates people that are happy, tolerant, and open minded within their religious communities and positive faith. It´s as sad as it´s mad, but the foundations have been laid in degenerated humanities and ideologies that helped form misogyny, racism, and hatred against anything possible for millennia. MarketWorlders make themselves feel great and look philanthropic by giving bread crumbs of their perverse wealth, accumulated by aggravating all problems thanks to lunatic neoliberal dogmas, to charity. That´s how once decent, purely theoretical, humanities, which didn´t claim or wished to be omniscient and infallible bad fringe science incubators, became obedient mouthpieces of the corpocracy, with research so bad that the replication crisis itself looks reputable in contrast. Conferences, from TED to all the other clones of it, often sponsored by megacorporations, want uncritical, entertaining, flow and productivity pushing, happy go lucky rainbow unicorn content at any cost and they just pay for what they wish. So if a politician, anyone from junior to emeritus professor, author, speaker, etc. wants that sweet, much extra cash, she/he should better just use fake pop science focused on weak humanities, avoid serious, controversial topics at any cost, and spend the rest of the career traveling the world and spreading the vicious, noxious word everywhere their corporate overlords command them to. One can make many times the money than with real and important science, because in a dead democracy with controlled media, the manufacturing consent power is used to push the agendas of the chosen ones that give the best sockpuppet impressions. Two of the weirdest examples of how mammon corrupts are Hans Rosling and Stephen Pinker. Rosling was first really helping people, did altruistic things like working as a doctor in Africa, until he started promoting his animations and software, by downplaying and relativizing the devastation the neoliberal exponential growth doctrine brings over planet and people, and wrote a book about it. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... It´s very improbable that he didn´t know that his data and conclusions aren´t correct, although it might be that he was an optimist who didn´t want to see the truth or really believed in the good of what he did, no matter how many logical fallacies, bad statistics, etc. included. But he is harmless in contrast to Pinker who once was a serious scientist, doing research, writing books, having a reputation in complex fields such as linguistics and evolutionary and cognitive psychology, but then he got severe Enlightenment now. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... It´s not just that he is misusing humanities, data, ignoring any implication of the replication crisis, etc., but he is even going full frontal aggression against anyone who doesn´t share his wrong mentality, he is attacking other people for not having the same, unproven, artificially constructed opinion he has. Dissecting this concoction brings to light so many problems of politics, economics, media, etc. because they are all acting that way, proselyting instead of enabling a public discourse, doing whatever propaganda machines are made for, making satire news websites like The Onion a better, deeper, and truer source of information and education than any established media channel. A wiki walk can be as refreshing to the mind as a walk through nature in this completely overrated real life outside books: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winners... Check out Giridharadas`great argumentation in talks and live conversations, owning and destroying the ridiculous mainstream, pop psychology, fringe economy bigotry: https://www.youtube.com/results?searc...+ https://www.youtube.com/results?searc... And again, replication crisis time: Because of much talk and discussion about the replication crisis, I add these thoughts to nonfiction books dealing with humanities, so you might have already seen it. A shocking insiders´ autobiographical story of epigenetic in action, opening the question of where to go with ethics and morality if one has no chance
A shocking insiders´ autobiographical story of epigenetic in action, opening the question of where to go with ethics and morality if one has no chance to choose on from the beginning, with an absentminded, ill mother just interested in her own suffering and a sociopathic father Trump has become himself too. It´s vicious, the author shows how the influence of the elder generations formed a climate that was a dark caricature of what family should mean, the opposite of what someone needs to become a friendly, mind opened, and tolerant human. Ironically it´s closer to what is shown on the TV, Donald Trump loves so much to watch and see himself in, than to normal family life and one simply wouldn´t believe that it happened like that. But I had the same thought before reading Bob Woodwards´rage. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5... I just couldn´t imagine that someone would deliberately, because of a desperate need for attention, openly speak about so many things that can be used against him. These interviews are a glimpse into a soul formed by a childhood dominated by fear, humiliation, alpha predatory male dominance, frigidity, psycho terror, and extreme affluence neglect. It also popped up in Michael Cohens´Disloyal https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5... especially regarding the leadership style that could be seen as a reflection of how he and the other kids were treated when small and how he used to behave towards employes, family, spouses, and humans in general in his own company before becoming president of the once less hate filled and troll lead United States of America. Reading these 3 books opened my mind for the thoughts and mindsets of conservatives, republicans, and ideology fueled people in general and made me just more tolerant in one regard. That they had no chance, that the same would have happened to me if I would have been born in such a family, that I could be like Trump. And that it´s the ideology and model of society that is breeding modern humans for a few tens of thousands of years now, not to forget the origin before, that is mainly to blame, because many highly developed nations have intelligent and responsible leaders and would never vote that way, never let it happen that their population is so susceptible for propaganda and manipulation thanks to devastated educational systems and extremism thanks to neoliberal turbo capitalistic privatization. Thanks, Milton. It doesn´t wonder that someone who was brought up under such conditions is cold as ice, goes to the movies while Freddy Trump is dying, doesn´t care about his mugged mother, tries to get all his father´s money, treats his wives and women in general that way, and the hundreds of known things he did over his life. In a way, his father succeeded, because he seems to have made him exactly the unscrupulous person he wished for. As a clinical psychologist, Mary Trump has a special look on what happened to her and her family, and reading this reminds one that one shouldn´t underestimate people who grew up in sociopathic madness, to be unleashed onto the world with the trouser pockets full of unlimited money to do whatever they want without consequences, treat people like garbage, especially never get sophisticated and wise themselves, take no responsibility for their actions, be incompetent because of a disinterest in education and learning, etc. She draws a picture of someone who never grew out of his defiant phase, is at the same time extremely unfriendly and inhuman, but craves for attention and recognition (that´s extremely obvious in Woodwards´Rage too), has no real control over his emotions, could be diagnosed with a load of mental problems or even real diseases, etc. and really shouldn´t be in a position of power. Hard to imagine a home without books, but even this was inherited. I had to think of Trumps´proudness not to read, imagining him as a kid in a mansion without novels, well described with the quote "A home without books is like a body without a soul." That´s just topped by the dynamic between Fred Trump, Donald Trump´s elder brother Fred Trump Jr, and the man himself. As said, one normally sees this in TV dramas, not in real life, a father that is disappointed by a normal, friendly boy like Fred and motivates and promotes any kind of negative Donald behavior. It´s like breeding supervillains and punishing the social, normal kid for not being a bully and reckless egomaniac. In this anti intellectualism could also lie the foundation of his hostility towards science, because bashing against something one doesn´t know, understand, or like is much easier with complete ignorance than with at least reading a book a year or something. I kind of wonder how he reads all the important top secret and general stuff a president gets put onto his table… There is no excuse for becoming such an adult, but it gets easier to understand why and how people could become like this, when vivisecting how ideologies shape the societies they control. Looking at different socioeconomic and cultural evolutionary steps, one can see the living consequences of different ideologies put in action, from futuristic to anachronistic with many stages in between. The Scandinavian states, Netherlands, Swiss, etc. with their https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_... focusing on Keynesian eco social ideals, free education and health care, strong social nets in strong states, fair taxes, etc., are highest on the Human development index https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_D... followed by many other Western democracies, but the more free market, neoliberal, and weak state it gets, the worse the situation for the humans living there. It´s no wonder if, in democracies around the world that are still fueled by wacky ideologies from fringe humanities such as economics, bad pop psychology and sociology, and political sciences, people develop mentalities like Trump. If an innocent baby and small child can be formed into an adult that is disliked by so many people, something is going terribly wrong with the whole democratic system, because dozens of millions of deluded and mesmerized voters following and adoring hate speech and trolling isn´t a sign of an enlightened, progressive humankind, but of a conservative, backlashing, and extremely dangerous mentality. I´ve added the next passage with the links to my review of Rage and Disloyal too, because it just fits perfectly, so you might have already seen it. To be fair, I deem all, except of the Scandinavian countries, Swiss, and the Netherlands, industrial northern democracies the same messes, just with different grades of suffering and pain for the citizens. Social evolution has stagnated and lead to a dead, ridiculous democratic system, completely controlled by lobbyism, not to be taken seriously anymore, leading to a situation where comedy shows and websites such as The daily show with Trevor Noah https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwWh... The onion https://www.theonion.com/ The late show with Stephen Colbert https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMtF... etc. bring more depth, insight, and truth than all education in schools, newspapers, news networks, and, lol, the representatives themselves. If it wouldn´t be so sad, destroy the planet, and harm so many innocent people, especially in the Southern hemisphere, the laughs wouldn´t be that bitter. Downplaying very serious topics, ignoring the protests of half of the population, and educating girls to be silent, obedient, and submissive possibly
Downplaying very serious topics, ignoring the protests of half of the population, and educating girls to be silent, obedient, and submissive possibly isn´t what so called emancipated democracies should stand for in the 21st century. Everyone forgets history and repeats it, any kind of social movements, anti slavery, women's rights, gay rights,… have been ridiculed with stupid, inhumane, conservative arguments, and it´s the same with race, gender, and all kinds of structural violence nowadays. It´s this toxic phantasmagoria of having reached the end of history, of living in an enlightened society, that leads people to think that the progressive critics and victims are just exaggerating the problem, that everyone is overreacting, that feminists are demonizing the poor male perpetrator, leading to the bizarre and mad situation that victims of harassment, abuse, rape, and physical violence have to explain themselves, get attacked and insulted after the trauma. That women have to live with the fact that trying to find help and justice leads to more problems than letting the criminals get away to be able to stalk the next victim, that everyone from law to colleagues, family, and friends won´t logically stand behind them, but instead repeat the slut shaming, victim blaming, and a bit afterward hate crimeing to get the victims in line and silent again. Sometimes, there seem to be even more concerns regarding the rights of the offenders if they are just harassing and are, still, no serial rapists, that their civil rights and privacy gets attacked, that they shouldn´t be stigmatized, that they should get a second chance. Not just downplaying the problem, but helping the dangerous predators afterward, that´s how society rolls. Commercialization of everything, reifying of women for financial interests, plays in here too, but it´s nothing compared to the epigenetic factor of bro codes, fraternities, clubs, parties, organizations, anything promoting predatory male pack behavior. It´s everywhere, it´s accepted, it strangely doesn´t seem to change or really disturb anyone and whenever a woman complains, she is shouted down by the consensus of continuing the good, oldfashioned sexist way. That´s culture, tradition, at least each fourth up to each second woman having to deal with the danger of rape over her lifetime a small price to pay for cozy social gatherings, fun at the costs of others, and giving the torch of downplayed abuse to the next generation. Heck, these people behave like that in front of their kids, they condition them to mob, stalk, and intimidate their victims. These are no minor crimes, the psychological consequences of trauma and abuse similar to PTSD, although the tradition of the legal systems deems anything higher than human lives and integrity, but it´s done as if it are trivialities, kind of boys are boys style for all males of all ages, leading to illogical and sick dogmas. Dirty old man sexually harassing: Do you hate old people? He doesn´t mean it that way. Group of young men making sexist comments. Don´t you like a compliment? Etc. Imagine a guy would be groomed and groped, that would of course be absolutely unacceptable, but hey, as long as it´s just a woman… Just google victim blaming and slut shaming and look at the pictures, that´s the culture we´ve built. External shame, Fremdschämen in German, is meanwhile one of my dominant emotions regarding mostly anything in connection with manly masculinity, culture, and traditional society in general. The immortality Trump is desperately searching for has already been created by wantonly helping to unleash a plague after nearly causing a WW3 style n
The immortality Trump is desperately searching for has already been created by wantonly helping to unleash a plague after nearly causing a WW3 style nuclear escalation that could have lead to a major war while downplaying racism, hate, and misogyny. Like a child, he can take no criticism, never finished the deviant phase. This is certainly psychologically fascinating, especially regarding the latent and clinical pathology, but shouldn´t there be any mechanisms to maybe make sure that the psyche of presidents, ministers, and members of important cornerstones of democracy is stable? Not uncertain, not breaking easily, built on solid logic, not on drivel and false accusations? Trump's relationship with Kim is a prime example of a narcissistic, social media obsessed hedonist without any conscience regarding the fact that he is having a bromance with a dictator, more keen on showing Woodward pictures of him and Kim than talking about the geopolitical and macroeconomic consequences of the historic event. Not as if he would have been able to spontaneously answer the simplest questions about these topics without preparation, maybe also one of the reasons why most of these interviews are about him, his attitudes, and people loving him because he is he. Me me me, again, child behavior. That Trump wants to make himself immortal can´t just be seen in the historic milestone of talking a walk with Kim, but in trying to give Woodward a poster, arranging the White house desk like a PR table, and generally being obsessed about how cable news and social media react to him. Not serious books, not serious news channels, not magazines, the president watches TV and frenetically and obsessively scrolls social media timelines to decide what´s the best for his reputation, sometimes for the country. It´s not as if there would be enough monuments, world wonders, and megalomaniac buildings that show the desperate search for honor of mighty men by demonstrating their importance. Strange and telling that they never got or get the idea of doing it with reforms and pushing positive social and cultural evolution. Why not talking about a secret nuclear weapons program? Would be even cooler if it would have happened live on a press conference while his generals are facepalming and eye rolling in the background.Would have made a great meme. Possibly he would have even mentioned where it´s researched. That´s just one of these points, nuclear war threat, that lets one ask if there isn´t still too much power concentrated in too few hands, especially because I naively tended to think that there are so many consultants, assistants, and lobbyists that help any high ranking member of the government to make decisions. It terrifyingly seems to me as if leaders still have some, potentially fatal, power left to just do anything they deem funny, I mean, how Mutually Assured Destruction is this? One must imagine that leading employees were highly alarmed and stated that they deem the President unfit, dangerous, and generally completely incompetent without real attention span, the ability to reflect and understand, and many other problems. Nobody knows if this is just perfectly normal for Trump or if it is his age, but is again opens the question of how it´s possible that in a democracy, where a representative function such as a President should be under control by the other elected members of the government or any similar strange control instance entities, he can act just as he wishes to. That´s not really what one understands and imagines when thinking about democratic elections, that´s more of an authoritarian government style, so how is it possible that there is still so much power in the hands of some strange people without any control instances? I know that I am redundant in the last 2 paragraphs, but especially regarding that the danger of a Covid19 pandemic was known since the early days of February and nobody reacted in an appropriate way, nowhere, not in Europe, not in the US, just Korea and Japan going into an intelligent direction, let´s one wonder about how, why, and especially, when again? What´s the next surprise government knows about for months but, because the King or chancellor or leader or whatever is in a bad mood or disinterested, is simply hidden. Completely without ageism, one has to ask, just as with certain jobs or maybe one day driving, if there shouldn´t be tests and/ or age limits for certain jobs. Strangely, it´s logical for a surgeon or a pilot who could hurt or kill just one or a few hundred people, while world leaders able to harm and injure hundreds of millions in their own countries and globally, are free to act as long as they wish, although it´s biological logic that at a certain, highly individual stage, the effect of age influence the ability to function. It´s ridiculous in each country with politicians that are far beyond 65, but the US is actually breaking the record, it might be impossible to spin doctor such candidates in other countries or, said with the wiseness of kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0ZTK... certain candidates wouldn´t be elected by enlightened citizens. Which sophisticated adult would ever dare to react by asking why this very old, seemingly not so healthy and mentally fit great great grandfather should be a president, asking how long he will live, etc. Subjective note: That´s why I am astonished, motivated, and still hopeful, but extremely misanthropic regarding mostly anyone above the age of 25 to 30. It´s forbidden to think that by the stupidity of adult´s political correctness and misunderstood courtesy, but as wrong as it just can be. Of course also a sign of a dysfunctional, mad, wrong neoliberal economic paradigm, where just superrich, white, old men can effort becoming president with programs continuing the completely wrong social direction most of the world is heading towards for soon over half a century. 74 and 77 years old, Trump vs Biden, honestly? That´s not really what one is imagining as a living, active democracy, more the caricature of a gerontocracy. The lenses it will be seen with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_His... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrohi... I´ve, in other reviews, said before that I wanted to avoid soft humanities such as politics, economics, homeopathy whose inventor was totally nuts too, etc., but I just couldn´t resist, sorry for that, relapse is my second name after procrastination. Because of much talk and discussion about the replication crisis, I will add these thoughts to all following nonfiction books dealing with humanities in the future, so you might have already seen it. The worst bad science practice includes, from Wikipedia: 1. 4. „Psychological research is, on average, afflicted with low statistical power." Big History at its best, it´s showing the important connection between past atrocities and current systems, between old ideologies and their new, subtle, dishonest disguises. Just because something isn´t easy to spot as a malady from the past doesn´t mean that it´s cured, that society is vaccinated, that it´s not a hidden plague still metastasizing, mutating to new forms, evolving to a more politically correct chimera level. Not just the weird ideology mixups of old and new extremist groups, but especially the ones who deem themselves sophisticated, enlightened, and mostly privileged people, who don´t get the whole picture and impede and delay real, substantial change by promoting a dysfunctional, deeply unfair system and having or simulating a blind eye for the cognitive dissonances inside their minds, political parties, and well meaning NGOs. It´s telling that conventional history just keeps talking about the numbers, names, and obvious actions, but strangely and suspiciously avoids linking them to too hot, controversial, and thereby dangerously true, political, social, and especially economic topics and contemporary history. Would look too bad and open too many questions, not really correspond to what is usually talked about in history class, education prefers memorizing names, places, and numbers instead of reflecting, interpreting, and questioning how we came to where we are. But at least the bigotry is consequent, because the devastating results of this history of shame are concealed and downplayed in most media too. Of course, schools can´t teach critical thinking, where could that end, instead they just keep helping to create underprivileged, poor white people´s prejudices by not detecting their racist ideas to keep them fighting against the minorities, blacks, anyone in bad, oldfashioned divide et impera style, and by not stopping to keep relativizing a horrible, disgusting past or at least preventing radicalization. Far too many implications and unwanted questions because of the parallels to the second half of the second millennium after whatever, the escalating current problems, the colonial system, world history, the real economic and ideological reason for the war on drugs, redlining, and all the other atrocities. Openly admitting and explaining to the kids that government, media, and faith used, uses, and will use propaganda and psychological warfare elements to keep the population from rebelling isn´t what the Board of Education department for the promotion of functional illiterates barely able to decipher the fake sockpuppet candidates to actively participate in a dead democracy where all parties promote the same mad, exponential growth, no sustainability or distributive justice course, wants. Ever wondered why Big History seems to just be storming the bestselling lists, but no classrooms or curricula? They prefer the Hollywood fantasy happy go lucky endings of history where, as soon as some superficial laws, but not the underlying problems and missing wealth distribution, are changed, all is a democratic, equal, and fair wonderland. That´s why such marvelously researched and fact based books with very modern approaches towards both arguing and opening new debates are essential, although they make much of the establishment, especially economics and politics, shiver in fear. Such a realistic, hard, and direct evaluation of both history and present day lets their common platitudes seem even more bizarre, wrong, and unscientific. The approach of trying to make something as understandable as possible to reach the biggest audience, is often better than very good, but too detailed, specific, and complex bricks of books. In this rare case, there is the old, big, fat edition and the new, shiny, short one and I am not sure if I should still read his original Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... because I guess that most of the essential parts have been converted in this easier to read form for younger audiences. It was the only option before this new edition, now it´s certainly something for history nerds and I don´t know if it offers just more data or also more essential thesis that makes it worth reading. Anyhow it would be a good idea for other, progressive, critical authors, citizen journalists, social critics, whistleblowers,.. to shorten and simplify their works to be more appealing for younger audiences, especially cutting out anecdotes, unnecessary complicated academic language that is promoting the author´s ego, and wordiness about numbers, names, and places, and possibly cooperating with professional fiction authors who know how to write thrilling and suspenseful. That could open the gates for the exponentiation of readers both important, but self blocking, authors and audiences could benefit from, not to forget society. It is close to 400 years between the so called Exploration of North America and the end of slavery in 1865, and just 80 years from then until the end of WW2 in 1945. Depending on the national perspective, a very strange system of illogical argumentations, constructed out of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaga... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_m... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... sets in there. Racism is a virus, but as long as well meaning, but terribly mislead mental anti vaxxers keep avoiding changing their worldview, overcoming their subconscious bias and agenda, and aren´t willing to openly debate important topics without being offended, it keeps spreading in sophisticated parts of the population that deem themselves progressive, open minded, and pro equality and emancipation, promoting structural racism trough white fragility. An example that an idea in a blog can be expanded to a very sharp criticism of self righteous, bigoted arguments, that small steps can accumulate to books changing the perspective for many. Once again, I don´t get the people hating the truth and its harbingers, their sad, restricted minds would be pitiful, if they and the media and system that made them wouldn´t be so dangerous and destructive. It´s not as if this was a humanities style mind game, it are real, true, hard facts, impossible to ignore if one has just a grain of anti opportunistic thinking inside one´s mind. I do completely understand and promote the opinion behind the title, because most of the elitist, white population and the average population is blind to the harsh reality for most of the world´s population, unable and unwilling to consume critical and progressive media, read books, have own opinions, and prefer to stay with nothing more than repeating the stupid mantras they hear from whatever apologists they prefer to consume. Proselytizing misguided activists that are worsening the problem by doing as if no more structural violence and inherent social, political, and economic problems exist, doesn´t work, faith has done its job and lead to total isolation from the willingness to change. Aggression and denial will always be the answer, the longer they´ve been so called activists, social justice warriors, and torchbearers of political correctness, the fewer may overthink what lies behind the easy, happy go lucky, unicorn, fairytale, lies many adults love to tell themselves to keep the self-deceit engine running on high tolerance levels. They are lost, stranded in a mixture of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cogniti... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of... salted with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaga... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_m... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... fueled by the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replica... Average people don´t really have a chance, from history books to news channels, from education to friends, from politics to relationships, a dulling system of wrong harmony and fringe cultural evolution, a doing as if no problems exist anymore, an extremely subtle system of bigotry, has been established to enable an until before unreached dimension of mendacity, duplicity, and misery beyond the gated communities. The whole system brainwashes people do as if they would be living in an enlightened utopia, encouraging them to be active to keep worsening the problem and waste their time, energy, and intelligence with propaganda telling that everything is fine, never mentioning serious topics, always just driveling about anecdotes, personal tragedies, and the one or other deeper going problem in faraway countries, never on the same continent, not to speak in the same country, unimaginable. Because everything is great there because of their altruistic activism, ok, and everything thinking something else is an as…. aspiring, real progressive who wants to help them in overcoming their logical fallacies. The book reminded me of DiAngelo Robin´s White Fragility https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4... and Solnit Rebecca´s Men explain things to me https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... The setting is similar and I just can´t realize why privileged, rich, wannabe sophisticated and intellectual people, just don´t get and understand the underlying problem of their own agenda, biases, and blindness and react small children defiant phase style, are hurt, feel discriminated themselves or, favorite option, just ignore anything that doesn´t correspond to their secretly extremely conservative worldview. It´s so ridiculous, people who are rich and privileged because of the consequences of a history of violence, racism, slavery, war, oppression,… are doing as if they are feeling bad, victim rolling around like mad, tweeting sad, because they are confronted with the real world. As soon as one sided ideologies, even seemingly positive, progressive ones, are involved, forget it. I´ve mentioned some points that fit in this context too in my reviews of this 2 amazing works White fragility https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... and Men explain things to me. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... I guess I´ve already had some redundancies in these reviews, so instead of repeating myself, I decided to just troll around a bit and give the links instead. Same underlying problem, same manifestations, same lack of solutions. Subjective resume: After having stopped talking about many no gos, such as meta and macro economics, politics, faith, sports teams, favorite beers, etc., I´ve insted directly tried talking to humans, but what shall I say, there is no state to make with indoctrinated demagogue fan girls and boys. Just invest in the youth, the next generation, the kids, and the very few progressive elder ones and forget the rest. They won´t change and you waste your time interacting with them, could have talked to, and worked with open minded people towards sustainable change instead. The older I get, the more ageism is getting a problem, isn´t it ironic, soon I´ll hate even myself and not just all I´m ranting about. Sad. Shouldn´t I instead begin disliking what the youth does? A note to my trusty review readers: Guess I am jumping off the depressing, ideology fueled nonfiction train soon here for a while, just a hand full left to read, and it doesn´t really help with being hopeful, positive, or less misanthropic. Saying that it takes energy and motivation would be a bit too pathetic and untrue, because I am pretty cold and hardened, but of course one subconsciously becomes, in an individually very varying extent, the creature of what one does, says, reads, eats, plays, etc. Especially these 3 books showed me the dimension of problems so huge that they leave one hopeless, at least for 1 or 2 other generations, breeding further evolved humans by removing epigenetic issues from the ape domestication and behavior cultivation process just takes time. Some reading is, as said, still to be done and reviewed, especially Khan Cullors Patrisse´s When they call you a terrorist A black lives matter memoir https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... Gay Roxana´s Not that bad Dispatches from rape culture https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... Lindy West´s The Witches are coming https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... and Kantor Jodi´s She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4... but most of what had to be read is read, said, reviewed, inappropriately dark humor satirized, internalized, and hopefully spread as wide as possible. Certainly, new, world improving works may come, I look forward to more inspiring, solution filled books, but for the moment, I think that it ´s this hand full of a few dozen books I´ve read and listed (ok, these are hundreds) in my social criticism and social progress shelves, hardly anyone reads, that could change society. The thousands of also important works showing all the grievances are of course essential too, but solutions, in a political and societal climate unable to achieve compromises and convergence, are much more expedient. Spreading the word has alpha priority, I hope I´ve done my tiny, insignificant part, learned a lot on this journey, and I hope I could give the one or other reading inspiration. Devour such books, spread the word, open minds, crush the phantasmagorias of well meaning people that just didn´t have the possibility and literature to understand that they are unwillingly part of the problem instead of the solution. A very important work, using shocking autobiographical experiences to show and transport what it means to be systematically discriminated against throughout one´s whole life, opening the eyes of the privileged ones who have the potential and influence to help boosting a change after half a century of deliberately diminishing the quality of life, chances, and potential of black people. „You are fighting for your rights after centuries of unspeakable atrocities, mass impoverishment, a lack of distributive justice, genocides, prison industry complexes, slavery, mass murders, hate, police brutality, and racism? Seems as if you are a dangerous extremist, maybe even a terrorist.“ That´s the only option for the conservative forces, such as Nixon and many others, behind downplaying the past and current injustices they helped causing and aggravating, because if they would let an open, scientific, fact based debate, maybe even including ethics and morality, happen, they would lose and have to explain cruelty, exploitation, and massive media manipulation. So their only option is to use as many unfair, illogical, and wrong propaganda techniques as possible to make the victims of a decade long war of a government against its own citizens look like perpetrators and aggressors. There are different reasons and motivations for disliking activism for people not directly involved. Refusing any kind of activism, because it could lead to the insight of one´s own indifference, cognitive bias, and thereby criticism by others. Not making any distinction between pro sustainability and equality activism such as environment, anti racism, environmental protection,… and religious and extreme far right and left activism without peaceful civil disobedience and protest. Preferring divide and rule, not wanting people to organize and become real political factors and powers, because one likes money and much of it. Etc. That democratic, Western governments all over the world are trying to make it more and more difficult and dangerous to be active, enable law enforcement and private security firms to attack peaceful protesters, built Orwellian surveillance systems like directly fresh out of the textbook, is the more meta level of trying to keep protests small and attack women protesting for their rights. Even white supremacists get more tolerance by this system than the victims of their hate. How media instrumentalize and mischievously misinterpret the real agenda of the protesters to make them seem more dangerous, mislead, and wrong, is the icing on the cake of individual and collective prejudices, stereotypes, and anachronistic thinking. Chris Rock and David Chappelle, two of the most ingenious comedians, whose works should be mandatory readings in school, possibly together with George Carlin and many other sarcastic social critics, made racial prejudice and its immense stupidity a main element of their careers and sensitized millions of people for topics nobody wants, dares, or can openly talk about, especially in mainstream news media. It would imply too many correlations to the whole, sick, dysfunctional democratic system. One of the options to not go mad, angry, or sad might be to continue their work by showing the illogical madness using hard facts and fight it with laughter, spread groundbreaking, progressive novels like this one, and oppose the anachronistic institutions by ridiculing them. It seems as if nothing has been learned out of the sad period of inquisition and burning witches, because just not talking about problems such as sexual abuse, fat shaming, rape culture, abortion, gender pay gap, sexism in media, etc, and doing as if they didn´t exist anymore in White Educated Industrialized Rich Democratic, or bigoted, hypocritical, etc. countries, is worsening the problem through downplaying and ignorance. West owns the ridiculous democratic, educational, media, heck, all systems and just shows them what they are. I´ve read quite a lot of anti racist, pro equality and social change, feminist, progressive literature over the years and am coming to a point where I would say that I can give the quality seal of perfect, objective, fact based, and true research distilled to an unbelievable book. Think about that, all the Big History, free independent whistleblower citizen journalism works completely ignored by all mainstream media, not discussed, debated, not influencing laws or politics. It´s so sick and disturbing, after realizing the true state of society, that one truly doesn´t want to participate or help any of these so called, pseudo democratic institutions, organizations, and, in their core and hearth, deeply racist, hateful, misogynic, feudal, and elitist systems. That´s why witch hunt is such an appropriate title, that´s what´s happening each time when someone dares to speak up and protest against atrocities, unfair systems, and very especially, offender protection. Because poor old serial rapists don´t know that that´s not trendy anymore, molesting and grooming have drastically fallen in public popularity, but please, don´t be so serious about it, are you a misandric ageist who doesn´t want him to have some fun before funeral when he is already that old? Boys are boys too and the girls asked for it, as always, those little witches. It makes one so sick to think about it. I am, subjectively, very sure that the sad truth is that there is more hate trolling, slut shaming, victim blaming, and downplaying and relativizing media articles than people standing up against sexual violence, rape, abuse, and psychological manipulation, that it´s a minority of people who aren´t directly or indirectly promoting such behavior and helping the criminals to get away with. This is very often accompanied by the role of the victim, of course exclusively for criminal offenders and people with destructive, dangerous mindsets, the real victims should please get over it silently. That´s what I´ve read, heard, and seen whenever talking to people about controversial topics myself, one comes with detailed, hard, proven data, logical and universally acclaimed facts, and the other one is just like: "I am offended by this nasty topic. You make me sad, I feel bad, that´s unfair, you don´t have the right to do that, how evil." Sure, adult, pseudo sophisticated, privileged, white, people who hardly ever had to really do hard physical work in their lives, never suffered from abuse, don´t feel good when it´s getting serious, and attack the legions of hundreds of millions of women who were victims of crimes so disgusting most of these hypocritical do gooders could never overcome such trauma themselves. It´s strongly reminding me of Khan Cullors Patrisse´s When they call you a terrorist A black lives matter memoir https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... and Kantor Jodi She Said Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4... because it shows the same problem. People who are have been discriminated for centuries, women and people of color, are wanting nothing more than the same right, legal protection, freedom of speech, basically the same human rights their opponents have for generations, and get nothing but violence, discrimination, hate, death threats, and real killings. As if the history of suppression and exploitation hasn´t been enough, these anachronistic creatures keep attacking their former victims who dare to rebel and fight for their rights. Victim role and defense mechanisms prevent an emancipated and enlightened reappraisal of past and present grievances, culminating in worsening of syst
Victim role and defense mechanisms prevent an emancipated and enlightened reappraisal of past and present grievances, culminating in worsening of system immanent problems, backlashes, and indirect and unconscious promotion of racial divide. Building mental suppression reflexes, fortifications against unwanted truth, is a sign of an immature and romantic idealization of one´s ego for the price of being part of the problem. The term aversive racism is well chosen, it´s exactly the subconscious mechanism many are unwilling to accept as part of their socialization and conditioning, an epigenetic factor expanding in those trying to be against prejudices, but unwillingly promoting them in a way they don´t even see. It´s the misuse of altruism by indirectly enforcing stereotypes, belittling minorities and other ethnicities, and downplaying the own bias and agenda one deems positive. Look at who built Western society, what inhuman ideologies they had, and think about what that means about the foundations of any system and how much of it is still there under the surface. If one isn´t willing to accept it and wants to keep living the illusions while having a privileged life, try this one: Contrast the reality with a fictional culture built by women for women, an ecotopia by environmentalists, a techno utopia by futurists, etc. In none of these cases someone would deny that key elements of the main ideas can be seen in all elements of the culture, but in reality, of course, no, thank you, inappropriate idea, we are over that, everything is fine. Ignoring own problems worsens them and the older we get the more passive aggressive indirect racist mindsets, that are often indirectly expressed in economic and political contexts, come to mind. Whenever a person is insecure about not possibly promoting ideologies that have integrated exploitative and evil elements, one can easily find cozy reassurance of the righteousness of one's behavior thanks to echo chambers and media exponentiating the hypnotizing sound of all these decent people who can´t all be wrong. And then, bam, someone dares to tell the truth about such self deception mechanisms that don´t just include individual blinders, but many other, good willing people with the same opinion, friends, family,… that of course also don´t deem themselves part of the problem and the natural reaction is, of course, extreme outrage, pure white fragility. „I, an activist for years, decades, having so many friends of all ethnicities, etc. yada, should be a bigoted, opportunistic enforcer of racist ideas? You, harbinger, are wrong and should be ashamed for making me feel bad about your fake history news! And I am activating my being offended mode because now I just feel and can´t think anymore.“ It´s exactly what I´ve experienced with many other problems privileged, white people don´t have to deal with and build illusions, ivory towers, and excuses for their inactions and stubborn behavior around them.instead. In Europe, precisely Austria, it´s done with refugees, the economic system, nazi past, sexism, conservatism, etc that way. People have their unbalanced, strange, implemented opinions they mainly built on news media, friends, and family instead of book and science and repeat bias, mantras, and illogical and bad explanations. As soon as someone points the finger on the hard, real facts, they react this way, get aggressive, change topic, do as if they didn´t mean it that way, behave like expected by good extremists and fanatics. The refuge of pseudointellectual wanna be experts that keep repeating whatever their social media feed drips in their mind, even infecting people that should know better. Even well meaning people who are active in charity organizations, NGOs,… are prone to this blind spots, some strange examples I´ve tried out: Try talking to environmentalist about positive aspects of NGOs, to human rights activists about dehumanizing elements of our whole system and how it indirectly promotes circles of violence instead of just helping whistleblowers and journalists, to hard working people who invest much of their money in destructive, useless consumerism, to green party members…or to anti racism and equal rights groups about this. Forget it, they will act like kids, immediate defiant phase activation, lalala, don´t want to hear. Honestly, part of my misanthropy is that I´ve lost interest in and respecting of many people who are so blind to how they have been instrumentalized to greenwash corporate responsibility PR camouflaged as real activism without even recognizing, and absorb the propaganda as part of their identity, thinking we have reached the end of history, attacking anything questioning their distorted and self aggrandizing world view. They are lost, stranded in a mixture of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cogniti... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of... salted with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaga... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_m... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychol... fueled by the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replica... that legitimates their disturbing views with fringe science. Their whole personality is built on nothing more than the soft washed, trivialized, indirect fallout of anachronistic ideals still secretly metastasizing and growing with any descendant of see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. At a moment in history where anyone could build an objective opinion by using the amazing possibilities of wikis, apps, independent media, and progressive nonfiction authors instead of reading the same, repetitive, everything is fine fairy tale unicorn rainbow BS. Instead, they keep being used by forces they don´t want to be real, whose main interest is to divide and rule by fueling any kind of conflict between social groups to keep their status. It made me hyper sceptical regarding many humanities and soft sciences they use as arguments too. It also took me some time over the last decade to go chronologically through the feelings of disbelief, anger, something close to hate (one of the rare emotions I feel next to flow, hungry, the other ry (not sorry), and sleepy), motivation to try to change people, I am still laughing about this one, repeating of the first circle, to end up with cold, cynic apathy for, disinterest in, and avoidance of the overwhelming majority of the population. But it luckily fueled my belief in the youth and the next generation instead. Power resetting people´s mindsets is very difficult and if it´s not combined with an extreme ideology (and even then it´s close to impossible to make people accept that they´ve been wrong over years or decades), but with thinking of themselves as progressive founding mothers and fathers of a better future, it gets close to impossible. They´ve invested time, heart blood, belief, studying, debating,… in becoming the person and identify they are and I don´t believe many of them will change, because it includes many other aspects of their agenda and ideology, they would have to reevaluate and revise key elements, something too brutal and hard. See what I just did, I indirectly defended white fragility, it´s truly a hellish circle. And an extremely ridiculous one in the eyes of discriminated groups and minorities, it´s a kind of black comedy mentally instable person gag where the wealthy, carefree, lucky ones do as if changing the inhuman system that made them rich, and some of their opinions, is something unfair, painful, and gruesome to them. A wiki walk can be as refreshing to the mind as a walk through nature in this completely overrated real life outside books: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prejudice https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrim... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultura... ...more |

The book is mainly focused on the many tragic protagonists and politics, not so much dealing with science, and brings a new level of acts of inhumanity of a government against its own people to light. I mean, they called it gay cancer, that kind of sounds like a disease of the male, gynecological disorder, or childhood disease, implying and connoting that it´s no problem for all other groups or the general public. Reagan was no good person. It´s Big History at it´s best, combining all elements with a focus on telling the story through its protagonists, giving a prime example of how it should not be done and making one feel stunned regarding that nowadays (2020) many democratic governments are filled with the same indoctrinated persons. The only difference may be that they can´t openly act out their misogyny, racism, homophobia, etc., they sometimes even don´t realize by themselves and deem themselves to be good people, and hide it behind economic and political pop pseudoscience that indirectly legitimates them to do things that lead to the problems. If it would have only been the state, but the health care sector, the doctors, blood banks not testing, everyone was on the bandwagon effect train of homophobia those days and helped to prevent an intelligent solution to avoid a sexually transmitted, at the time always deadly, epidemic. The most illogical and disturbing fact is that the world of medicine treated normal diseases, the media could talk about and got funding by the government to prevent catastrophes, because it were child friendly, normal, prime time people who suffered. That it are often single tragedies like Rock Hudsons´ death that lead to a change in public opinion, has a dark and a light sight, a sweet and bitter taste. It´s great that single individuals, be it through their tragic death or nowadays with their activism to tell more about problems than the pseudo education system can do, as it shows that really everyone can change the world. It´s dark and gritty because it shows that as long no megastar talks about it or a white, rich, person suffers from it, the problem is camouflaged, downplayed, or seen as „their“ problem, plague, or, worst, own fault. But as many times before (and today), as long as the disease just affected the poor, discriminated, or, in this case, gay people, it could be even interpreted as a punishment sent by higher entities and nothing one wanted to talk about. So no money for cures, no coverage, a cloak of silence until it escalates so much that it can´t be ignored anymore because the few objective newspapers keep nagging with their insidious and penetrant questions and proved facts everyone else ignored. So now, with years of unnecessary delay, the ministers and bureaucrats are of course trying to get started and help the population and today the governments aren´t that ignorant and inhuman anymore? No, of course not. It´s one of the worst medical problems, because as long as the policy doesn´t change from neoliberal stupidity to an ecosocial Nordic model, the majority of the poor and uninsured population keeps spreading the virus. And we are talking about a rich, industrialized country like the US here, the conditions in the Southern hemisphere are so terrible that it´s reasonable for politics and media to avoid any talk about it. Developing countries prisons and rudimentary health care systems are breeding grounds for a mixture of all kind of multi resistant superbugs, but there is (still) no money to make with finding a cure as long as the problem hasn´t sufficiently infected enough Westerners to be interesting for big pharma, not to speak of any government or malaria or neglected tropical diseases. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neglect... One of the most impressing acts of incompetence was the governments attempt to close the bathhouses to stop the spread in hope of a kind of „out of sight, out of mind, no problem anymore“ motivation and ignoring the discrimination leading to the closeted problem, missing research and funding for cures, instrumentalized science, the missing publicly funded health care system, and the mixture of hate and prejudice floating trough the administration. It´s so much easier to blame any kind of minority using blatant lies or just ignore the problem than to self reflect. It´s difficult to find something that is close to letting a disease, those extreme worldwide spread could have easily been prevented, circulate in the own population until it grows to one of the worst plagues in human history because of conservatism, stupidity, hate, racism, and bigotry. A new paragraph would have to be added to the international human rights violation acts, possibly to the already existing laws regarding the negligent and wanton spread of epidemics and pandemics, but referring to the special circumstances of the impossibility to deal with it with quarantines or vaccines (still). I´ve read many bad things about kings, god emperors, presidents, and stuff, but I can´t find similar examples, because it didn´t end, as in the past, with the atrocities like war, genocide, or slavery, but will continue forever with the worst consequences for the poor people in the Southern hemisphere as they won´t even get the vaccine if it´s finally developed. Just as they don´t get the drugs making the lives for wealthy, infected people in industrialized countries bearable to normal nowadays. Before the internet, victims had, in theory, a certain control and power to fight against harassment, but as tech evolves and gets more sophisticated, it seems to be more like an endless arms race, similar to those between white and black hat hackers, with the victims having worse starting conditions. The tragic stories that are told are just a beginning, the already terrifying level of perversion humans have reached in misusing new technology a dawn, and as we get more and more connected it´s not just our tech that is developing, but the scopes of abnormality too. Trolls and hate porn are just the first stage of an evolution, deep fake is the next big thing and by adding a few decades, VR, AR, neural implants, growing importance of online reputation,… to the mix, one can imagine what people without the money and tech to protect themselves may have to endure in the future. Virus and malware protection may be useless if it are some humans who turn themselves into producers of malevolent, self-replicating, virulent spreading fake news that destroy and end (social) lives and careers. Knowing your enemy and „attack is the best defense“ were useful tools in ages without social media and limited possibilities for the attackers, but nowadays one of the main motivations for mentally ill, perverted, evil people, and hate filled trolls is to keep on doing their sick thing and they will invest massive amounts of time in educating themselves in becoming so good in avoiding prosecution and getting tracked down that an average victim will be chanceless against a professional hater and cyberstalker. It doesn´t help that law and state are so slow and incompetent in dealing with those topics that they are no help, not to speak of the social media companies. It´s especially obvious if one compares the real life consequences of human interactions involving stalking, mobbing, insult, duress, sexual harassment, and psycho terror that can lead to severe consequences for the perpetrators until prison, while the same crimes committed online fall under a kind of „Wild West, still no laws available here, we are too conservative, incompetent, and lazy to do something“ mentality by legislators. With conventional phone calls, emails, and letters it wouldn´t be possible or legal to do such awful things, but with social media and the internet, there are no real problems and obstacles for trolls and haters anywhere visible on the horizon of the near future. I have the feeling that there is much more talk about anecdotes, personal tragedies, hate against the ones who dare to fight against the problem of male sexual violence, much public and media aversions against MeToo, emancipation, victims´law,… all signs that we are not close as highly developed and sophisticated as a society as we wished and dreamed to be. These are system intrinsic problems created by sexism, manifesting themselves in underaged girls/boys that go through horrible traumas many women/men couldn´t withstand and are afterward online victim-blamed and death threatened while the law enforcement is having no means to help her/him. Another personal opinion is that I wouldn´t call psychopaths and sociopaths sick in the way that they need help or suffer like people who have mental problems that destroy their lives. It´s more that their psychological abnormalities are what enables them to enjoy the suffering of their victims until it becomes the only possibility for them to find satisfaction, that some of them are born this way without any abuse to rich, loving parents, and that our whole jurisdiction is still focused on protecting things over living beings so that they don´t have to fear real, appropriate, and hard punishment. Western societies imagine themselves so modern, civilized, emancipated, progressive, and pro victim protection that they are totally blind to the still omnipresent and currently totally escalating problems with psycho terror and sexually motivated crimes and instead of quickly modernizing the laws they do, as always, nothing and wait for the next government to deal with this uncomfortable topics, especially because many of their conservative and fundamentalist voters don´t want to hear a word about those topics. Goldbergs´work is amazing, as the successes of all people working to help others, but how depressing, heartbreaking, and also dangerous it must be to do this job is impressive and few people may have the guts and perseverance to do it without getting destroyed themselves. I see one of the worst and unrecognizable stealth dangers in toxic friends and haters that are disguised as friends, followers, and likers and are working on long-time plans to harm other people. While offensive evil persons are easy to identify (as dangers, not IP addresses), it´s close to impossible in cases of vipers that have, for a personal reason or because of mental health problems, the goal to destroy the victim. Above all the book shows how the male tendency to violence and revenge has entered a new stage, where they can act out their misogyny, because they are unable to deal with rejection and breakup in mature ways of self- reflection and criticism and searching the reasons in their behaviors, flaws, and errors. I am a bit paranoid regarding my online security and privacy (very complex, often changing 16 to 20 digit passwords, less personal information, etc.) and that may be one of the only options to protect against outer dangers, including not sharing too much personal information and the well-known tips by security experts, but there is still the problem of trusting other people, especially loved ones and partners. An impossible to solve problem, as love can turn to hate and nobody can protect her/himself by preventive mistrusting everyone, sharing no pictures or too intimate information, and being cold and aloof to stay protected. Even if one does so, it will be soon possible to produce any kind of compromising video content with deep fake, something big and scary because it will get more and more difficult to impossible to distinguish real from faked revenge porn. One of the most insidious long term tactics may be the combination of hacking, identity theft, social engineering, and fake posts, profiles, messages, and pictures. A profile or account can get secretly compromised and controlled pretty easily if the attacker really wants to, because each WLAN, device, many passwords, have weaknesses and someone having the skills, just waiting for it, and even following the victim in real life to hack her/him will succeed. If it´s done professionally, the person won´t even realize that there is any problem, just wondering why people are suddenly so reserved and reduce contact. These tactics are used in authoritarian governments too to isolate and stigmatize the opposition without them even recognizing. The victim won´t ever notice that something is going on, as the activities will be invisible or just at times when the person isn´t online. Faked messages to friends and families from the account the person doesn´t know about, faked messages back from everyone the person knows and reactions to the unfriendly faked messages that isolate the victim,… destroy any kind of relationship and friendship. In the case of work, this could lead to dismissal and loss of reputation because hardly any company will invest in a cyber forensic scientist to check if there are any professional manipulations. Faking IDs at dating portals can go two ways: Fake accounts of the victim that bring many problems in real life, if working place, home, places of social activities, hobbies, are included for meetings. More sinister is to invest month or even years to simulate the perfect partner, possibly even paying someone to play the role in real meetings, get more sensible data this way and use it for a devastating attack, possibly combining it with the described social engineering tactics to destroy friend, family, and simulated love relations at the same time. Because the sick methods of and tips for and by the seduction community and pick up artists are already widely available online, tutorials for destroying other peoples´ lives by using these tactics are certainly already available at one of the darker places of the internet or deep/dark web. I guess they have a comment section, Reddit group, rating system,… too. One of the best approaches comes from specialized cybersecurity and cyber forensic companies that use AI and self- learning algorithms that are permanently scanning the internet, search and browse results and social media sites for possible violations of victims´ privacy and block each attempt immediately by deleting content at the moment it´s posted and track attacks to collect data for law enforcement. It´s an evidence of incapacity of the state that relatively small companies are able to do this and protect people from criminals, something that should normally be done by the police. The role the authorities could play in a, not only sarcastic, future setting is the one of protecting the privacy of the perpetrators, fighting for their online privacy and freedom of speech, and being rigorous in executing offender protection, as they already have immense experience in this regard.
