As a reader with an advanced degree in public health, Lewis is using classic epidemiology/One Health/emergency preparedness terms and concepts that go far and above just “research” - he has mastered the application of the principles as it applies to the current COVID 19 outbreak.

It kind of meanders - the book talks about the plights and growth of students enrolled at the Sushi Academy in Los Angles, and throughout the course of their study, inserts historical/ecological/gastronomic information based on what they are learning to make.
It was meh. I don't think the author did a great job of fleshing out the folks he was "following", but I found the tidbits about the sushi to be fascinating (this is coming from a major sushi/Japan fan).
Interesting read to an extent, but I'm sure there are better books on the topic elsewhere. ...more

Acho does a great job of speaking of his experiences being a black man with Nigerian immigrant parents in the US, and also is highly skilled in basically answering “uncomfortable questions posed by white folks” in an extremely thoughtful way. Acho does this by looking into historical contexts, and applying them in modern day to explain the underlying systemic racism and other mechanisms in this country.
I cannot recommend this book enough - I only wish I had read it sooner. Extra points to Acho because you can hear his voice and sincerity throughout this piece, and it is much appreciated. As a white person “doin’ the work” as our society moves towards positive change and taking their first steps, grab this book ASAP....more

I dunno, I listen to a lot of pods and this just didn't do it for me!
But, I was pleasantly surprised by the honesty in this book. In fact, I think the candid way these ladies spoke about the ups and downs in their friendship made their podcast MAKE SENSE - I understood now why I felt that way about the podcast when I listened to it. Overall, the relationship between the two women (through the podcast, anyway) seemed contrived and strained, and now reading the book, I understand why.
I rated this book so highly because it is unique - I have never come across anything quite like it. It perfectly illustrates 1) changes in friendships and why they happen 2) uses data to back that up (love data) and 3) speaks about the uniqueness of female friendships which are valuable, painful, and important all at once! Both ladies spoke so honestly about the changes in their friendship, and how "big friendships" are so valuable (and take effort to maintain!)
Really enjoyed this one - obviously not a MASTERPIECE, but that isn't what it is striving to be. Just a good look at something which I don't feel like is talked about with frequency ("big friendships") and what they mean to us....more
