Uhm?? I loved this ??? I swear, I constantly give up on this series - I thought the first book was just okay, I tried the second book and enjoyed it, and then HATED the third book. So, I had given up on it, until I saw this one pop up on scribd and decided.... why not?
And I LOVED it. I've always wanted to love this series because I love Seanan McGuire's writing and really loved everything else I've read by her so I'm SO HAPPY to report this one was WORTH IT.
You can also 100% read this as a standalone if you're not interested in the others!!
This follows a young girl named Kathryn Lundy - who, I 100% imagined as little, baby Kate because of the same name and this girl's personality being almost identical to me as a child - who goes to the Goblin Market when her door is open. The Gobling Market is perfect for Lundy, but she has to follow the rules - the most important being that, by your 18th birthday, you must chose to either stay in the Gobling Market forever or never be allowed to come back.
I ADORED the characters in this book and the discussion and exploration of friendship and what one gives up for others. I love the original poem The Goblin Market so I was kinda excited about this, and I'm pumped to report how much I enjoyed it!...more
I believe the first time I read this I gave it a 4 star but I'm upping it to 5 upon this reread.
I actually got to read this for my final paper5/5stars

I actually got to read this for my final paper in postcolonialism because, although this isnt a postcolonial text, I'm looking at vegetarianism from a cultural lens and this book very obviously stands out as a case study into vegetarianism in south korea (it goes a lot further than that BUT part 1 was very helpful). having to read it so closely really helped me to make sense of this story that I had a hard time understanding, even if I enjoyed it, the first time. There's SO MANY good themes, conversations, and beautiful quotes in this book and is one that will stick with me for a very long time just like it has in the 3+ years since I read it the first time....more

This started out FANTASTIC but was ultimately way too long for how little actually happened. We have way too many characters, too many POVs and it suffered from the middle-grade trope of having our MC meet a dozen new people and telling all their back stories and helping all of them. Also there were too many things repeated over and over and over and loooooong passages of traveling or thinking with nothing actually happening or coming out of it. I loved being in the world again especially with an older Lyra, and I loved several parts of this but it just got to be boring and unnecessarily long....more
I was so lost for so much of this book LOL I pride myself in loving weird books and challenging books that keep you on your toes but this one 3/5stars
I was so lost for so much of this book LOL I pride myself in loving weird books and challenging books that keep you on your toes but this one was so difficult to figure out. The narrator would switching mid sentence between reality and her dream world. She was lying literally in the first paragraph and kept telling us something and back tracking PAGES later so I was constantly just wondering where the heck in the story we were. Coetzee is a really wonderful and unique writer though so it was quite an interesting ride!...more

Hmmm... this honestly feels like a novel that Gillian Flynn started and then was like "eh i don't feel like finishing this" so just threw together the ending. The beginning was SO interesting with such fleshed out characters, an interesting premise, interesting characters, etc and then the end was just... awful. It was so rushed and lowkey stupid so yeah - she shoulda just made this an entire book not a short story....more

No question this is as good as everyone keeps saying. Absolutely beautifully simply written, incredibly unique especially on such an over used idea like time travel, absolutely tragic but also incredibly happy and dealing with some tough subjects almost everyone can empathize with, honestly one of the few books I can call INSPIRING.

This was really a very interesting novel - it felt simultaneously very cozy and like you were peaking into 1930/40s japan and the lives of these people, but also very intense and emotional with the war aspects. It definitely could get dry in places but I really felt like these girls became my friends by the end of it!
But, for how long it was it ended in such a weird place?? Like it felt like the author ended in the middle of a chapter and turned it in. Legit ending with talking about one of the sisters having diarrhea? Am I missing 100 pages of this book???...more
I really did like this BUT I found it to be a little too spelled out? I love books that explore grief and exploring ones self but this one 3.75/5stars
I really did like this BUT I found it to be a little too spelled out? I love books that explore grief and exploring ones self but this one was just a bit too obvious/a bit too much telling rather than showing. I feel like this could have been a full 350-400 paged novel and it could have done the idea more justice because it really was a beautiful and very interesting twist on this type of story!...more
I'm very torn on this book... this was advertised as a "fake dating romance" and as such, you expect certain things when you go into it... but3/5stars
I'm very torn on this book... this was advertised as a "fake dating romance" and as such, you expect certain things when you go into it... but this book was just nothing that I was expecting.
Firstly, the things I ENJOYED: - the awesome korean/korean-american rep - the awesome, realistic family rep - both parent/child and siblings - such awesome conversations - loved the ending with all the different things that happened - realistic college stuff
things I did NOT enjoy: - the "twist" about half way through the book with the love interest... just... no - frank was SO unrealistic with the whole "love is the only thing that matters" like hes just so annoying and YOUNG - didn't love the romance
so yeah, i recommend if you're interested, but this didn't blow me away like I was expecting...more
