52 Doorstopper Books for Long Fall Evenings

Posted by Sharon on September 9, 2024

Those of us who have spent a lifetime reading books will recognize this feeling: Sometimes, you get a little ambitious and you wonder—could I tackle a book that size?

Such is the theme of today’s collection of doorstopper books for long fall evenings. How are we defining a doorstopper? 450 pages, minimum. The big ones.

To put this list together, we gathered together a sampling of long books from recent years; older but still relatively recent books of the long-ass, high-profile variety; and some old classics and hefty Victorian triple-deckers you are likely to recognize. Several of these titles may prompt that familiar interior monologue: “OK, this year, I’m finally going to read that one.” (Dune! Middlemarch! Infinite Jest!)

From the brand-new stack, Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s family trauma-drama Long Island Compromise has been a popular book club selection this year. Phillip B. Williams’ novel Ours furthers a rich tradition of Black spirituality (and surrealism) in American literature. And longtime fans of Kelly Link (we are legion) will want to tackle her latest expedition into thoughtful contemporary fantasy, The Book of Love.

A couple of starting points for adventurous readers: Kate Atkinson’s unputdownable Life After Life combines evocative historical fiction with a kind of parallel-universe thing that tinkers with the very architecture of how plot works. (The book also won the Goodreads Choice Historical Fiction prize in 2013.) House of Leaves, the weird fiction classic from author Mark Z. Danielewski, does similar things with structure and format while telling the story of a house that’s bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

Click on the book cover images for more details about each title. If anything looks promising, click the Want to Read button to add it to your personal shelf. And don’t forget, many of these books can be used as actual doorstoppers. It’s true. We’ve done it.

Richard I can't believe how many of these I have actually read!

Memorable ones are Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell read pre-Goodreads in 3 volumes; Middlemarch read 2016, and reviewed; and Infinite Jest read 2015--2016 and reviewed.

Cloud Cuckoo Land is on my current reading list, but has been on the back-burner for a while.

message 2: by Law (new)

Law I've read three books on this list. Wellness and Babel were okay, but Dune was enjoyable. I gave it five stars. Can you recommend me another book to read from this list? There's a wide variety of books on here, including The Bee Sting and The Women. I want to read them, but are they any good?

message 3: by Susan (new)

Susan I have read a few of these, Jonathan Strange, Fairy Tale, Demon Copperhead and The Women. All enjoyable reads.
One of the longest books I’ve read was The Uncut Version of The Stand by Stephen King. I love his writing.

message 4: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Love this. I just started Dune so clearly I understood the assignment.

message 5: by Mica (new)

Mica There are a few a I want to read! The God of the Woods, By Any Other Name and obviously The Women and Babel <3

message 6: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Such a good list!!! I have read thirteen of them but have so many more on my TBR. Bring on the long fall reads!

Our book club read the Bee Sting- it is long and rambles- rated low by 2 of 3 that finished it and was a did not finish for 3 others. The Women was my favorite this year- but not all agree

message 8: by Kyra (new)

Kyra Bredenhof Wow, I've actually read a bunch of these! Looking forward to reading Anna Karenina, Les Mis, The Odyssey, and the Lincoln Highway!

Bee Sting is long, The story felt a lot like Wellness to me, I kept thinking: "Why am I reading this, what does it have to do with the story?" I almost gave up on it, and Wellness. But I stuck with it. The end was AMAZING. My coworkers have all read The Women and loved it. Not my style of story so I will probably pass.... :) Happy Reading!

message 10: by Myrtha (new)

Myrtha outlander series and shantaram.

message 11: by Lisa (new)

Lisa 450 pages is not that long. I consider doorstoppers at least 600 pages. I've read 20 on this list. Lots of good ones, but I think Les Mis is my favorite.

Shogun is the doorstopper I'm reading right now, but luckily it can be broken into two books. I love my "Big Fat Books" shelf in my books.

Also, I'm on team loved Bee Sting! The question and answer page for it is really fun, too.

message 12: by Katie (new)

Katie Hanke Wuthering Heights?

message 13: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Jane Eyre a doorstopper? Guess it depends on your edition.

Mel (Epic Reading) Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is one of my fave books of all time!!
House of Leaves has been on the TBR forever…
I’d also have liked to see The Luminaires on the list. Another one I need to get to.

message 15: by Margot (new)

Margot Portal My husband used to love "doorstoppers" and I can see several of his favorite books of all time on this list -- Middlemarch, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, Les Misérables, Dune, and especially, The Name of the Rose. I think he would have enjoyed Life after Life as much as I did.

message 16: by Dolly (new)

Dolly Good list, but were is the ultimate doorstop: War and Peace? I've read 10/12 off the bottom of the list and 10 in my TBR.

message 17: by Angela (new)

Angela Vas Margaret wrote: "Love this. I just started Dune so clearly I understood the assignment."

I love Dune. Currently reading the 3rd one. :)

message 18: by Zohal (new)

Zohal The Covenant of Water is amazing! Another doorstopper would be the author's other book Cutting for Stone which is also incredible and any recent historical fiction by Kristin Hannah.

Nicole Beyer Law wrote: "I've read three books on this list. Wellness and Babel were okay, but Dune was enjoyable. I gave it five stars. Can you recommend me another book to read from this list? There's a wide variety of b..."

Disliked The Bee Sting greatly. Our book club read it- one liked it, I rated it a 2, someone else rated it a 1 and all the rest did not finish.

message 20: by Jadyn (new)

Jadyn Saunders I feel like there should be more Brandon Sanderson on this list. Mistborn isn't even his "doorstoppery-est" book by a long shot!

message 21: by Beth (new)

Beth Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Brilliant!!!

message 22: by Terry (new)

Terry A Gentleman in Moscow

message 23: by Marilou (new)

Marilou The best doorstopper I ever read was Stephen King's The Stand. And I'm way more of a historical fiction or literary fiction type of reader. But this book is so brilliant and so riveting, the pages fly and the characters jump off the page and it proves why Stephen King is one of the best writers of American fiction.

message 24: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Witherspoon Highly recommend The Covenant of Water.

message 25: by Cricket (new)

Cricket Muse Wool by Howey comes to mind as does Lorna Doone. Many a pleasant day in the hammock reading those.

Rachel Hutchinson Marilou wrote: "The best doorstopper I ever read was Stephen King's The Stand. And I'm way more of a historical fiction or literary fiction type of reader. But this book is so brilliant and so riveting, the pages ..."

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised they put Fairy Tale on here and not The Stand.

message 27: by Emily (new)

Emily Gone with the Wind, my ultimate can't put it down doorstopper

message 28: by Betty (new)

Betty Sullivan Terry wrote: "A Gentleman in Moscow"
Great book

message 29: by Linda (new)

Linda The Woman in White, Wilkie Collins

message 30: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Sullivan The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova is one of my favorite doorstoppers. I also love Dune, and Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay.

message 31: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine Linda wrote: "The Woman in White, Wilkie Collins"

That is an excellent book!

message 32: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine Beth wrote: "Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Brilliant!!!"

Read that many years ago. I no longer remember anything except it was an great book. Due for a re-read!

message 33: by Didier (new)

Didier Delahaye Jasmine wrote: "Beth wrote: "Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Brilliant!!!"

I picked it it up in a junk shop for a buck years ago. Read the synopsis on the back and immediately thought I have to read this.
What a ride that was. Midnight Express meets EM Forster would be my elevator pitch.

message 34: by Didier (last edited Sep 22, 2024 12:24PM) (new)

Didier Delahaye I would add Blackwater: The Complete Saga to this list. Just finished this 800 p behemoth over a holiday break. A gothic engrossing family saga that could be the brainchild of Stephen King and Lucinda Riley.

message 35: by Didier (new)

Didier Delahaye The Alexandria Quartet is one of those unavoidable doorstops. It's waiting for a fourth reading when winter comes.

message 36: by Didier (last edited Sep 22, 2024 12:12PM) (new)

Didier Delahaye Ulysses is one that will do just fine for me as an actual doorstop. I did it give it a good try though the old fashioned way.

Didier Delahaye Rachel wrote: "Marilou wrote: "The best doorstopper I ever read was Stephen King's The Stand. And I'm way more of a historical fiction or literary fiction type of reader. But this book is so brilliant and so rive..."

I agree and it's time I read it again. I would add to the King doorstops 11/22/63 to disprove those who think of him as a scary only author. The man is a genius with the pages and he makes them fly.

message 38: by Bj (last edited Sep 22, 2024 08:31PM) (new)

Bj In preparation for a trip to Florence and Rome I am reading Irving Stone's The Agony and the Ecstasy (776 pages in paperback). There is no rushing this biography of Michaelangelo Buonarotti.

message 39: by Oksana (new)

Oksana I read quite a few books from this list over the years, some were true gems. Highly recommend Johnathan Strange & Mr Norrell, The Covenant of Water, and Demon Copperhead.
I’m currently reading The Bee Sting, not bad so far, lots of thoughts on it already.

I agree!!

message 41: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn I have read 13 and have a few more on my Want to Read list.
I would add A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.
