Ellie Sawyer has always felt more comfortable with books than people, which explains why she’s a PhD history student neck deep in research and trying to complete her doctoral dissertation in time to graduate. But the final books she needs are half a world away in the tiny European kingdom of Lethersby, and the only time she can access the secretive Royal Castle Library is during the Christmas holiday.
Ellie is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery that has eluded Lethersby scholars for more than 100 hundred years by figuring out what happened to their long-lost queen, a young royal who disappeared shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. With the help of Mark, a handsome castle staff member who shares her love of history, she might be able to unravel the queen’s story. But Mark is keeping his own secret from her, and what they discover together could change everything for Ellie—and the entire kingdom.

I don't read a lot of Christmas novels, mainly because a lot of them are similar, Hallmark-like, and unrealistic. Sure, I love a fun read that I don't have to think through every now and then, but I mostly enjoy books with a lot of depth and needs-to-be-dwelt-on passages. And then, I saw Christmas in the Castle Library. The cover drew me first. Yes, I am one of those people who are a hundred times more likely to pick a book up if it has a gorgeous cover! Add to that missing royalty and a book about books?! I had to pick it up. And yes, this book could be likened to a holiday Hallmark movie--it's sweet, has a picturesque city, castle, nice people, that Hallmark drama, but it's more. It has depth, it has character growth, it made me cry when a section didn't go as I wished it to, but appreciated how it made the characters grow. I loved the themes in this book of trust in God and love for God, being the ultimate fulfillment in life.
Christmas in the Castle Library is the kind of book you want to pick up and snuggle in a cozy blanket, hot chocolate in hand, in front of a fire on a cold day. And, please, no distractions! This book feels like watching snow fall softly and hearing classical music playing. My only disappointment with this book was a couple of things written implying that the King James Bible is too difficult to understand, so one of the characters switched to an app on her phone. I find the language of the King James Bible beautiful, lyrical, and more easy to understand due to its precise language, and was saddened to see it portrayed almost as less-than because it uses beautiful language that a scholar who adores studying should find intriguing, wonderful for meditating, and, being well educated, should have no problem understanding, especially since she spends her days with historical research and ancient books. Overall, however, this book is a beautiful read, and I highly recommend reading it during the holidays. I received a copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Christmas in the Castle Library read like the soft, melodious rise and fall of a a piece of classical music that feels like home.
This book has the vibes of a Hallmark Christmas royal romance movie plus serious themes, enjoyable and relatable characters, and a historical mystery I itched to get to the bottom of. I'm excited there'll be a second book that goes deeper into the second phase of the mystery!
Some of the themes I especially related to were...
🕯️ second-guessing yourself and irrational fear of failure (I had a similar experience as Ellie in university where I was afraid of answering questions in class even though I knew I knew the answer—because I'd end up tripping over myself and saying nothing consequential in the end) 🕯️ life feeling too busy to keep up with your spiritual life 🕯️ learning who you are at a fundamental level, apart from your traits and interests
The romance was quite light, but I loved how it was portrayed! I particularly appreciated this line: "He wasn't just a cute guy; he was Mark, and the thing about him that truly made her heart ache was the very thing that she didn't even know how to name." I feel that way about my husband and I've rarely heard anyone else acknowledge it! I couldn't tell you what makes me love him; I just do.
I seriously could not recommend a book with more exquisite Christmas vibes ❄️🕯️🎄 (and there was frost on the ground this morning... perfect timing!)
Thank you to WhiteCrown Publishing for the complimentary ARC! I wasn't required to post a review and all opinions are my own.
Charming, romantic and uplifting, Ann Swindell’s newest release, Christmas in the Castle Library, is a must read this holiday season. Upon reading the first chapter, I was drawn in by the mystery of the missing Queen Alma and Ellie’s determination to discover the truth. While the mystery drives the story, the tender romance makes for a pleasant trip. I loved the sweetness in the romance. Mark is a patient, tenderhearted gentleman. As the book progressed, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of Biblical Truth Swindell laced through the story. Christmas in the Castle Library is a sweet, romantic Christmas mystery, but it’s also so much more than that.
I discovered so much about myself while reading the book in addition to enjoying the pure, sweet romance. Swindell crafted the story in such a way that while Ellie fights through her insecurities in the book, the reader can also gently examine their own as well. I absolutely loved the depth and emotion in Ellie and Mark’s story. The lessons unfold perfectly in a way that is thought-provoking without being preachy. The character development was excellent as well. I was thoroughly invested in not just the main characters, but the side characters as well. I absolutely recommend this book and I’m looking forward to reading book two when it releases!
Series: In the Castle Library, #1 Format: Kindle e-Book
Book #113 of 2024: THIS. BOOK. 🥰 Sighhhhhhh…….
I saw this debut novel a week ago and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So I bought it two days ago and finished at 1:13am CDST. Ironically, it’s my 113th book for 2024.
This has the wonderment of Cinderella but with so much more depth, growth, meaning, and spiritual reflection. It’s a contemporary romance and mystery but most of it takes place in a castle in Europe. It has an old world charm to it. I’m not even one to follow or be interested in royalty at all but these Christlike servants redefine royalty.
The Ingredients: - a European castle - a library - a royal mystery - gowns, a ball, Christmas & royal finery - a budding romance between a self-conscious doctoral scholar of European history and a handsome history lover and fellow reader - lots of Scripture and a focus on spiritual growth
Mix the above ingredients. Proceed with finding a recliner or a comfy couch, some hot tea, and a throw blanket. Notify everyone that you’ve gone off the grid until further notice 🤣
🎺 Let me just call it now: This novel will be loved by many and posted about numerous times in the months to come amongst Christian fiction readers. Go and buy it, borrow it, or read over a shoulder! (You’re welcome!) 😉
I found myself strolling through this book, re-reading parts, highlighting many times, and just reflecting on it. I took my time and just let myself be in a Christmas-y state of hygge over a novel. I didn’t want it to end so I’m so thankful that this is a series and more bookish bliss is coming.
I loved it start to finish and knew it was 5 stars early on. Sometimes you just KNOW❣️
"Bookworms, Christmas connoisseurs, and lovers of royalty, add Christmas in the Castle Library to your stockings (and/or wishlists) this Christmas! Ann Swindell's debut novel is such a beautiful tale of love, worth, and what it truly means to live by faith, tucked within the pages a sweet Christmas romance. The truth and wisdom found inside this delightful story will stay with me a long time."
...Is my official endorsement for the book, but (slightly less flowery language aside), I really loved this book. I wasn't sure what to think when I first started. It almost seemed more non-fiction than fiction at times because of the depth of discussions and research the main character took part in but I pretty quickly realized that's just her character. She's a scholar, she thinks things through deeply. I came to really appreciate that.
It ended up being equal parts super cute, adorably swoony, and deep. If you're looking for a light, romantic Christmas read without too much faith or challenge then, well, this one might not be for you. While it's definitely a sweet read, it has a lot of depth to it, and a lot of faith themes not only touched on but truly journeyed through.
Beautiful read and one I'm already looking forward to reading again.
I adored this book. I was hooked from the title and the story did not disappoint. I loved how faith so was effortlessly interwoven into the story, and that the conflict was natural and not highly dramatized as it can be in a romance book. Watching Ellie's faith journey in this beautiful setting of a castle and the castle grounds was inspiring. I could relate to Ellie in so many ways and this book spoke to me. It always amazes me, the ways in which God can use anything to help us work through things and draw closer to Him.
I loved the way Mark and Ellie interacted and how he treated her. I also really got into the mystery side and was so curious about what happened to the queen they were researching. I can't wait to continue finding out more about the previous queen and following the characters into the next installment of the series. Such a wonderful book. Highly recommend.
Wow, just wow! With this beautiful story, Ann Swindell went straight to my auto-buy author's list. Christmas in the Castle Library is a beautiful story that doesn't necessarily follow the traditional royal route and doesn't have your traditional heroine.
Ellie is a bookish scholar, who struggles with her self-worth. She gets a lifetime opportunity to go to Lethersby Castle over Christmas to finish her dissertation and meets the handsome Mark, a fellow historian. More than that I cannot share as I do not want to spoil anything for you.
This book has a beautiful storyline, engaging characters, stunning scenery, and incredible spiritual depth. I struggled to put it down and enjoyed every moment. It has romance, history, mystery, royalty, and truth. You won't be disappointed if you choose to read this incredible story. I can't wait for the next one.
Well done Ann on your debut novel, you are a talented writer.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but the views and opinions are my own.
If you ike Christian fiction involving romance and mystery, Christmas in the Castle Library needs to be on your TBR!
Here's why:
This story is so cozy! The library in the castle is a delightful place, and it makes you want to curl up in a big chair with a blanket and a mug of cocoa (and maybe a handsome man - Mark, who works at the castle, is adorable.)
The mystery is fascinating. The country of Lethersby isn't real, but the history the author has invented involving the disappearance of a beloved queen felt real to me. I was deeply invested in finding out what happened 100+ years ago, and I love the way the clues unfolded.
There is a strong Christian thread in this story. The characters quote Scripture, discuss faith, and work to deepen their spiritual lives. If you like a lot of Bible quotes in your fiction, this will definitely be the book for you!
Finally, it's not just a story about solving a mystery or falling in love, it's a story about Ellie learning to have confidence in herself and to see herself as the worthy, beautiful Christian woman she is.
I really enjoyed Christmas in the Castle Library. Thanks to White Crown Publishing for the complimentary copy. (I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)
What a beautiful story! I was utterly captivated by this book. The storyline was right up my book loving alley and the faith thread of this book is exquisite. It has one of the best faith threads of any book I've ever read. I will definitely be reading this book multiple times in the future. I am hoping for an audiobook version and I've already bought my own hard copy for my keeper shelf. I LOVED this book!! Book 2 can't come soon enough for me! It will be an automatic preorder.
A sweet, delightful holiday read about trusting God, conquering fear, and love - all set in a European castle! Add in a mystery, and an unlikely romance (with ROYALTY!) and this story is sure to capture your heart and imagination. A strong spiritual thread, and a great character arc for Ellie kept me pondering and wondering each time I had to stop reading. The ending was satisfying as well. Recommended.
Lovely. Just lovely. I'm a sucker for fictional kingdoms set in modern Europe. Add in a 100-year old mystery in said country and sign me up!!
I never realized how few books have female MCs like Ellie until reading this book and I'm reading this thinking, "wow, I really like this!" I so appreciate Ann making her MC in this way because I think she will be more relatable to more women.
While several aspects of this story are rather obvious, there were also a few big surprises that I really enjoyed! Don't be fooled into thinking that this is a Hallmark-esque story. Yes, it's a journey of discovery set at Christmas, but it's WAY deeper than any Hallmark movie. I also liked the flow of the story. The "climax" is earlier than I expected, which meant that we got more story "after". It's kind of hard to explain without giving things away, but it made me happy.
I alluded to this above but this story has a great balance of sweet, light Christmas joy and deep lessons. I mean, WOW! I did a study on 1 John this summer and John 15 has been a theme for this year for me. Those are just two examples of how this book hit close to home.
I enjoyed this book immensely and I'm excited that it's a series so there will be more adventures to enjoy!
I am on the Launch Team for this book and received an ARC. All opinions are my own and a favorable review was not required.
Christmas in the Castle Library was an absolute delight! The story is a perfect start to the Christmas season and a brand new series by Ann Swindell. The characters are realistic and will charm their way into your heart as you journey with them through trials and triumphs in their quest for faith and answers. The kingdom of Lethersby is quite charming as well! I enjoyed every minute I spent there and stayed up too late reading for several nights!
I am definitely looking forward to book two when it releases!
Thank you to White Crown Publishing for a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Reading this book is akin to snuggling under a blanket, by a lit fireplace in the winter. Its a cozy, gentle romance with strong faith elements woven throughout. In other words, this book was a lovely Christmas romance whose themes will stay with you after you turn the last page. Ellie's struggles to accept herself and to realize that her worth isn't tied to her accomplishments is an age old struggle we all face at one time or another. I thought the author did an excellent job keeping her relatable while showing her growth as the story progresses, especially her faith growing stronger as she realizes how much she's pushed God to the side in pursuit of her PhD. Mark was a great hero, he's a kind sweet man who has his own struggles. But how he loves Ellie was truly heartwarming, seeing her for her true worth and potential rather than just seeing the outside package alone. The struggles they face to be together were completely believable. I really loved the historical mystery that Ellie is working to solve as she works towards finishing her dissertation. The country of Lethersby seemed so real to me and made me want to hop on a plane to visit. Bottom line, if you're looking for a Christmas romance with depth and heart, this book is for you! This isn't what I would call a light read, it's definitely not a fluffy, Christmas romance one usually finds this time of year. It's deeper than that but oh so beautiful. I think for those who enjoy Amanda Cox or Roseanna M. White's books, this would be a wonderful addition to your reading repertoire. *I received an ARC copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
A delightful Christmas time story that shows how deep God's love runs, how it can chase fear away, and how easy (and hard) it is to just grab on. Set in a European castle complete with a mysterious Prince, a thrilling library, and the chance to see the path God has laid out, there is nothing missing from this oh-so-satisfying tale. The characters are so wonderfully written, flaws and all, that they feel like new friends you get to go on an adventure with. Ellie and Mark kept me glued to the story, cheering or moaning as the moments passed. The setting draws the reader in, smelling the old paper and ink from the library and feeling the cold of the falling snow. The story itself is so absorbing, time felt like it had no meaning as I raced through the pages. Ann Swindell managed to pull me completely into the story in the first chapter and had me sighing with wonder after the last page. God and His wonderful love flowed through each page, it was impossible to miss. And it connects so easily with real life and how people struggle through so many similar situations. And the undercurrent of romance was wonderful. They mixed so well and left a wonderful feeling when the story finished. I am so excited that there is another book in this series to look forward to! I'm already anticipating it's release! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Whoever said not to judge a book by its cover definitely never read Christmas in the Castle Library. The stunning exterior portrayal of Ellie wearing her Christmas dress in the library is but a hint at the adventure and romance that await inside. Ellie’s holiday research trip turns into an opportunity for a new life, not only physically but spiritually as well. More than just a charming Cinderella story in a fairytale castle, Ellie’s journey toward true freedom in Christ was very realistic and relatable. Full of mystery, scripture, and Biblical symbolism, this is a royal Christmas better than any Hallmark movie. Ann Swindell has gifted us a wonderful treasure in her extraordinary debut novel, and I will be the first to snatch up anything she offers in the future. Book lovers will not want to miss out on enjoying this beautifully written story any time of year. *I received a complimentary copy of this ebook courtesy of WhiteCrown Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I liked this book. I liked how Ellie grew through this story as she tried to solve the mystery of the missing queen. I loved seeing her discover, not only things about this mystery, but about herself. I also liked seeing her find love with a wonderful man who supported her in her quest for knowledge and who saw the potential she had. I thought the author did a great job of keeping us guessing about where and why the queen went missing and it was nice to learn why she chose to leave. I liked how each of the characters learned to follow their hearts even when it was different from what others expected of them. I thought this story had a sweet romance and am glad that things worked out in the end. I would recommend this story.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
This is like a modern day fairytale. Ellie has been fascinated ever since she was a little girl about Alma, the queen of Lethersby, abdicating her throne and then disappearing. She has decided to use the research as her theme for her doctorate dissertation. She is invited to the castle to read through some of Alma‘s journals. When she arrives, she meets Mark, the castle historian, of sorts. But Mark is a mystery himself. One other things that really intrigued me about this book is the multiple dimensions of the story. It definitely held my attention and my curiosity. There were a few parts in the beginning that I thought dragged a little bit, but I’m so glad I stayed with it because it was well worth it. It is a Christian, clean romance, mystery/suspense story. There is a blurb at the end that hints to another story in the series. I’m excited for it to release.
Christmas at the Castle Library by Ann Swindell was an great discovery. I think this is the first book by this author and I already like her ! Christmas at the Castle library was fun, enchanting and well written. I would easily identify with the main character and I loved how she was not « the model type of woman ». I also really enjoyed the history of the imaginary country the story sets in and, as a French person myself, I really enjoyed how the author used French words here and there :) I recommend this book and I think it is the first in a series so I can’t wait to read the next one ! -- I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publishers. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone. --
I have a new author to add to my list of favorites! This book has it all – wonderful characters, enticing location (a carefully crafted “new” European country complete with history and traditions), mystery to be solved, Christmas, royalty (it’s set in a castle!), and application of Biblical truth to real life.
I stayed up until midnight to finish it in one day (how could I go to sleep without knowing what happened??) and I was so excited to find out there’s a sequel in the works too!! I highly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy this book from the publishers. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
This was such a sweet Christian romance. It had light academia and Hallmark vibes all wrapped up in a beautiful story of learning "perfect love casts out fear." I loved how Ellie's story continually led her back to God and how He loved us first, flaws and all.
I also really enjoyed the mystery Ellie was trying to solve and how Mark stepped in to help her with the mystery along the way. (Someone get the smelling salts, because swoon!) I loved the juxtaposition of Ellie and Alma's characters.
Thank you to the author and publisher for the chance to read this! All opinions expressed are my own.
I love mysteries and history and castles and libraries and royalty.....this book has it all. What happened to Lethersby's queen during WWI.....she disappeared without explanation. Ellie has dealt with feeling not good enough her entire life and so finishing her PhD on the queen's disappearance will give her worth. Mark, the servant to the royal family has secrets of his own. Together they discover where their true worth comes from. I received an ARC from White Crown Publishing. All opinions are mine.
Just finished reading this ARC of "Christmas in the Castle Library" by Ann Swindell. She has written some non-fiction but this is her debut into the world of fiction novels and boy did she deliver! This book is such a wonderful, faith- filled book set in a fictional European Country, Lethersby surrounding the mystery of one of their queens who disappeared during WWI.
The writing in this book was excellent, the characters relatable and the story kept me engaged from beginning to end. It is a sweet story set around Christmas though reading it outside of the Christmas season did not detract at all from the story. In fact, after seeing all the Christmas stuff out now in stores this added to my excitement in celebrating Christmas in just over 2 months!
The author did a wonderful job of using Bible passages in this book. I found myself encouraged in my faith along with the characters in the book. The verses used were well thought out and added a richness to the story that I hope other readers can feel as well.
I would like to thank White Crown Publishing for the opportunity to review an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Loved this one. I loved everything about it. The main character was amazing; literally she has my dream job. I was so invested in this book that I stayed up much to late to finish. I loved the mystery elements. I even loved the plug for book 2, and usually those irritate me, since the book isn't out yet! I read the first chapter (freebie online!) and promptly bought the paperback so I could share this one with all my friends. Really, one of my favorite books this year so far.
Ann Swindell’s debut novel, Christmas in the Castle Library, is a delightful Christmas romance intertwined with a historical mystery. I am a fan of Christmas stories, and this one is excellent. Join Ellie, a Ph.D. student, and Mark, a castle staff member, as they work together to try to unravel the mystery of Queen Alma’s disappearance during World War I. Christmas in the Castle Library is perfect for fans of royal stories like The Princess Diaries series who also want faith-filled inspiration as they read. Swindell does a great job of capturing the sights and sounds of what it might be like to experience the holiday season in a castle in a small European country and infuses the story with the true reason for the season. I recommend Swindell’s book and cannot wait for her next one. Thank you to the author and the publisher for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Christmas in The Library is a not your average royal romance. It's filled to the brim with surprises, twists and turns, all leading us back to God's love for us. Don't miss it. It shines like the star atop a Christmas tree.
This isn’t my usual type of book, but I enjoyed it so much. In fact, I had a hard time putting it down. The characters were so likable and the story so sweet. There was even a little mystery to be solved. Definitely recommend!
Predictable, but in a cozy, warm-feeling way. I didn’t want to put down because the characters are relatable and the writing is lovely. Might be a regular holiday read.
