Let me start by saying I really love Suzy and her debut cookbook "The Mediterranean Dish" from 2022 is still THE best mediterranean cookbook I've ever read and still use regularly. I can't recommend it enough and still buy olive oils and spices from her website.
I was so excited for her new cookbook to publish this year, but, sadly, it just seemed different from the start...it felt somewhat rushed with less pictures, less stories, less connections...It's still a complete cookbook that I'm sure many will use and enjoy, but I was super bummed that many recipes were missing pictures, and I was surprised by how many meat recipes were included. My family mostly eats pescetarian, and while there are many fish and seafood recipes, several of the recipes included land animals - mostly chicken. I was confused by this, because Suzy says in her books to eat meat in moderation. So why is she so meat-heavy in this book? Maybe her diet has changed in the last two years and she's eating more meat now, but I have cut back on meat and have tried to incorporate more vegetarian meals, so this new approach didn't appeal to me. I had plenty of vegetarian meals to try something new for weeks in her last cookbook, but I only had 6 total recipes marked in this cookbook to try - and three of them didn't include pictures.
I love Suzy's passion for Mediterranean food and how easy her recipes are to follow, but this particular cookbook just wasn't a win for me. I hope she writes another cookbook but includes more vegetarian options. In the meantime, I'll continue to visit her website and bookmark recipes from there.
I was excited when this cookbook arrived. Her first cookbook, The Mediterranean Dish: 120 Bold and Healthy Recipes You'll Make on Repeat: A Mediterranean Cookbook, was truly delightful. I love Mediterranean dishes and am always on the lookout for new recipe ideas. I admit, the first thing I did was look through at all of the photos; very drool-worthy. What I liked about this cookbook was the number of recipes that were simple to prepare--not labor intensive. I like recipes that are prepared in one pot or pan. I love lasagna but not the labor in preparing; her Tuesday Night Skillet Lasagna is simple and tasty. This is a dish I will make often. The salad section is filled with many options. I love heirloom tomatoes with cucumber. Her recipe has the addition of fresh dill, parsley, and chunks of feta which I haven't done before. It will now be a regular dish for me. The Cozy One Pots and One Pan & Baked Mains has many delicious looking meals to prepare. Clarkson Potter provided me with a free copy of this book; the opinions are my own.
We sometimes look for something different to make for a weekend meal and this book offers simple easy to follow recipes with directions and great photos. Not all the ingredients will be in your pantry. In The Mediterranean Dish: Simply Dinner beloved blogger and bestselling author Suzy Karadsheh offers more than 125 recipes for incredibly delicious, nutritious Mediterranean diet-inspired meals that are so easy to get on the table.
Each chapter hones in on a different save-the-day technique, like the magic of one-pan cooking (One-Pan Chicken Drumsticks with Orzo); efficient and cozy one-pot suppers (Pantry Tomato Soup with Couscous and Pine Nuts); and fast and lean grilling (Shawarma-Spiced Steak). Skillet meals, supper salads, and mix-and-match mezze abound, along with a section devoted to protein add-ons in case you just want to add some quick skillet shrimp to Blistered Green Beans with Hazelnuts and Roasted Garlic–Dijon Dressing and call it a day.
